China deployed fighter jets and warships around Taiwan on Monday in military drills aimed at sending a "stern warning" to what Beijing calls "separatist forces" on the self-governed island. These exercises mark China's fourth large-scale drill in two years, as Beijing refuses to rule out force to bring Taiwan under its control. The United States criticized the drills, calling them "unwarranted" and warning of potential escalation. Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te, who has taken a stronger stance on defending Taiwan’s sovereignty compared to his predecessor, has further aggravated Beijing. #ChinaTaiwanTensions #TaiwanSovereignty #BeijingWarGames #USChinaRelations #AsiaPacificTensions #TaiwanPresident #DefendTaiwan #GlobalSecurity #Smartnewspk

This will put America’s warfighting capabilities under the command of a headquarters on Japanese territory for the first time and dispense with the need for U.S. forces in the country to wait for instructions from the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, which is located in Hawaii 3,500 miles away. The move is intended to keep pace with Japan’s efforts to build up its military capabilities, including a new joint military command that Japanese authorities are planning to stand up early next year. And Japan has opted to buy hundreds of Tomahawk cruise missiles from the U.S. that can attack targets on land. The efforts to launch the new U.S. Joint Force Command, as it is dubbed by U.S. officials, remains a work in progress. To establish it, the U.S. military plans to overhaul an existing administrative headquarters at a base near Tokyo named U.S. Forces Japan to enable it to command the approximately 50,000 U.S. troops in the country. Japan’s new command is expected to be located in the basement of its defense ministry. And U.S. officials haven’t said if they plan to establish a joint cell of American and Japanese officers from the two commands who can work side-by-side during a military crisis or to plan exercises, and where such a cell might be located. #pivot #usa #japan #china #Russia

The U.S. Department of Defense recently concluded the 17th U.S.-PRC Defense Policy Coordination Talks with China. The discussions focused on maintaining open military communication to prevent conflicts, ensuring operational safety in the Indo-Pacific, and addressing issues like freedom of navigation in the South China Sea. The U.S. reaffirmed its commitment to allies in the region and emphasized its stance on peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. The talks are a significant step toward managing U.S.-China relations, particularly in the military domain, amidst rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific region. Question: Does this adequately address the rising threat from China? https://lnkd.in/d8pfDT7v

Amid growing Taiwanese concerns that China’s escalating grey-zone activities could mask an invasion, and an expected 3% decline in the number of active duty Taiwanese servicemen in 2025, the US has approved further military assistance to Taiwan with a $567m package of weapons and military education alongside approval of a smaller package of equipment taken from US stocks. Meanwhile, evidence taken by two US congressional panels has highlighted the extent to which the US is falling behind China in preparations for future conflict. Particular concerns are the decline in US shipbuilding, a lack of capacity in the US defence manufacturing base and a Pentagon that is overly bureaucratic and decades out of date. #China #Taiwan #US

U.S. to send more warships, fighter jets to Middle East to bolster defenses WASHINGTON, Aug 2 (Reuters) - The U.S. military will deploy additional fighter jets and Navy warships to the Middle East, the Pentagon said on Friday, as Washington seeks to bolster defenses following threats from Iran and its allies Hamas and Hezbollah. The U.S. is bracing for Iran to make good on its vow to respond to the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh two days ago in Tehran - one in a series of killings of senior figures in the Palestinian militant group as the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza rages. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had approved sending additional Navy cruisers and destroyers-- which can shoot down ballistic missiles-- to the Middle East and Europe. https://lnkd.in/e_bHgUJF
