Here’s one for my former #avgeek colleagues. Those interested in #quantum are aware that the technologies will most likely change how we think about computational processes and encryption. But did you know that quantum sensors and atomic clocks can change how we navigate, reducing reliance on external satellite signals? A group led by Infleqtion UK, BAE Systems and QinetiQ has successfully tested components of an advanced quantum-based navigation system in flight for the first time. Of course, this can offer positive benefits in the form of secure navigation and protect commercial aviation and other transportation from warfare GPS jamming. But it can also be used for more ambiguous purposes, such as developing new combat air systems. While I am, as a graduate of Försvarshögskolan - Swedish Defence University always fascinated by the advances in #miltech, I am also always apprehensive about where they will eventually lead.

⚫What are the large black dots placed around the F-35? Raytheon's Electro-Optical Distributed Aperture System (EODAS) is a revolutionary sensor suite that gives the Lockheed Martin's F-35 unparalleled 360-degree situational awareness. Unmatched Awareness and Survivability The EODAS provides F-35 pilots with a full spherical view of their surroundings, utilizing six high-resolution infrared cameras strategically mounted around the aircraft. These cameras work together to deliver real-time, high-definition imagery directly to the pilot’s helmet-mounted display (HMD). This system not only enhances situational awareness but also significantly improves survivability in the most challenging environments. Advanced Sensor Integration The F-35’s EODAS seamlessly integrates with the aircraft’s other systems to provide a comprehensive operational picture. From passively detecting missiles and navigating through severe weather to providing infrared search and track (IRST) capabilities, the EODAS does it all. The integration of Raytheon’s strained layer super lattice (SLS) detector material into these cameras ensures that pilots receive the most detailed and accurate information possible. Beyond Traditional Capabilities What sets the EODAS apart is its ability to perform functions that were previously unimaginable. The system can detect and track multiple aircraft and missiles simultaneously, provide imagery for night vision, and even pinpoint the location of hostile ground fire—all autonomously and without increasing the pilot’s workload. This level of integration and automation represents a significant leap forward in defense technology. In the images attached, you can see how these infrared cameras are flush mounted on the F-35, providing seamless coverage and transforming the way modern warfare is conducted. The EODAS is not just about seeing more—it’s about understanding more, reacting faster, and surviving in any environment. A video of system in action is posted in the comments. Expanding Mission Possibilities The EODAS has also demonstrated its ability to detect and track ballistic missiles at ranges exceeding 800 miles and identify multiple small suborbital rockets in flight. It’s these capabilities that make the F-35 a truly unmatched force in the skies.
