Does your company have a “Veteran” Employee Resource Group or VERG? These groups help Veterans better understand their new organizations and transition into civilian life. During the 2022 Society of Human Resource Management Inclusion Conference, Omari Faulkner, (a public affairs officer for the U.S. Navy Reserve) said, “VERGs are phenomenal programs and all organizations should have." He encouraged companies to also incorporate these other retention strategies: * Invest in training programs that help Veterans understand their new jobs. * Draft and commit to a strategy for recruiting and retaining Veterans. * Create a benefits package that appeals to Veterans, such as offering more paid time off and paying them adequately. "Our bottom line should be to better understand this community and elevate them," Faulkner said. As this election day is looming and two of the VP candidates are veterans themselves, I’m reflecting on the profound contributions veterans make to the workforce, especially in today’s politically divided world. Veterans bring resilience, loyalty, and adaptability—qualities that are indispensable for any organization. As a veteran myself and prior NCO, I know firsthand the strength and commitment veterans enlisted and officer offer. Yet, many veterans struggle to transition into civilian careers, often due to a lack of "conventional" corporate experience, despite their unique skills and dedication. As we see todays election results lets remember the amazing country we have, the sacrifices some of us have made and continue to make for our freedom and the right to vote. At Glendale Parade Store, we recognize and honor the sacrifices of these heroes by actively hiring veterans and their families. Today, nearly a third of our team comprises veterans, including those with disabilities, as well as spouses of retired service members. These individuals have given so much to our nation, and hiring them is one way we can give back. Their adaptability, leadership, and problem-solving skills are the backbone of our work and drive our company forward. Let’s remember that honoring veterans goes beyond ceremonies; it’s about creating pathways to meaningful employment where their contributions can continue to make a difference. This Election Day, I encourage more businesses, especially small ones, to consider hiring veterans. Transition Hack for Monday! Strategies for Attracting Out-of-State Workers to Boost Labor Participation! Had a great discussion with a KPMG consultant on increasing labor strategy to include Veterans. One successful approach is direct conversations with transitioning Veterans and their spouses. I shared just how easy it is to find transitioning Military Servicemembers relocating TO Tennessee - 19 in seconds. We found every Army, Navy, Marine, Coast Guard, Space Force, and Air Force Transitioning Servicemember. The more information that gets disseminated on the economic benefit of relocating to Tennessee and its low cost of living means a larger benefit not just in the workforce but local communities. I know some agencies talk a good game of outreach but if they're not using platforms like LinkedIn they are massively falling short of 6K relocating individuals. Using this platform REDUCES a company's expenses and saves time with personalized outreach. If your a Veteran IN a company, in TN...its easy to have dialogue with Transitioning Servicemembers. Maybe you have a few more months of service, or perhaps you’re counting down the days—but whatever the case may be, returning to civilian life can be a big step. 📢 Retiring senior military leaders 📢 …this message is for YOU!! Your prominent role in the military is going to make you a huge target with many corporations, boards, businesses, etc. when you retire. They will dangle large salaries in front of you to be “Military Advisors” or “Veteran Liaisons” for what may seem like very little work. Essentially, they are hoping to use your name, status, and reputation to benefit their organization in some way. Please, please, please do your due diligence in vetting these organizations. Find the answer to these questions: - Where is your salary coming from? - What is the company’s overhead? - How do they make their money? - Do they use their profits to help veterans? - Is their profits made on the backs of veterans themselves? - Do the veterans that “benefit” from their service/product choose them because they truly are the best or is it because they don’t know any better? Keep in mind, the headhunters, recruiters, and employees will likely TRULY believe their product or service actually benefits veterans. So you will have to work harder to dig into the organization. Remember, it’s YOUR name and reputation that’s on the line. Just because Veteran, Military, USA, etc. are in the name of the company/non-profit/organization, doesn’t automatically make them good for our nation’s veterans. Don’t get me wrong, not all organizations who do this have hidden agenda. Many are wonderful! But there are snakes in the weeds. At a recent veteran related event, speaking to a veteran: Them: “So you are in recruiting for veterans and military spouses!? That is cool! What does your spouse do?” Me: “Yes, I love my team and we are passionate about helping the military community. My husband is a commander in the Air Force (and I go into more detail about the AMAZING base we are a part of)” Them: “So why do you even work?” Me (stunned): “Because I am the breadwinner and love my job” Them (more stunned): “Wow, well good for you.” Sadly, this is not a new experience for me as a military spouse. In the last few months alone, I have had similar conversations at least 4 times. It's no wonder that the military spouse unemployment rate remains at 20-22% and underemployment rates are closer to 60%. As a military spouse for almost 25 years, I have experienced both being told to be grateful for being paid $8 an hour despite being a 12+ year professional with an MBA and being asked why I even work. It's time we do better and actively work to remove the biases that surround the title "Military Spouse". One non-profit that is working hard in this space is Hiring Our Heroes. According to a recent article from Military Times, the United States Marine Corps has shifted its approach to focus on retaining enlisted Marines. They have introduced new bonuses, job options, and promotion policies to encourage reenlistments. The goal is to improve the quality of life and provide long-term benefits to Marines. And the results are promising! More and more Marines are choosing to stay for second enlistments, indicating that the efforts are paying off. However, there is still room for improvement in retention, according to Col. Eric Reid, the Corps' head of manpower plans, programs, and budget. The Marine Corps recognizes the importance of holding on to experienced Marines, especially in preparation for potential conflicts with technologically advanced adversaries like China. By retaining these skilled individuals, the Corps can reduce the time and cost spent on training replacements. While there are some concerns about the downsides of an older force, such as decreased deployment eagerness and higher expenses, the emphasis on retention has helped the Marine Corps overcome recruiting difficulties faced by other branches of the military. To create a retention climate, the Marine Corps has implemented various initiatives. Commanding generals have been tasked with prioritizing retention, and career planners are engaging with Marines earlier in their terms to discuss reenlistment options. The Commandant's Retention Program offers streamlined paths to reenlistment and greater choice in duty stations for top-performing first-term Marines. In summary, the Marine Corps' plan to stop Marines from leaving is yielding positive results.
