Seismic Shift - Access & Inclusion # 4. This past week Access & Inclusion at Cérge has been all about Local Government Councils. With accelerating interest from Local Councils in Queensland, Victoria & Western Australia. It is great to be home again for a week and a big shout out to the Sunshine Coast Council who have taken us under their wing. What is genuinely amazing is the breadth of venues types where our technology is being applied to support individuals with disability to "Know Before You Go". From the iconic new City Hall in Maroochydore, Event and Function spaces, Community Halls, Libraries, Garden Ecology Centres, Sports Stadiums but also beach wheelchair access points and cemeteries. Local Councils have a significant role to play in supporting Access & Inclusion for people with disability given the sheer number of community facilities under their asset management. Procurement can be a little tricky to navigate with Local Councils and fortunately, Cérge is apart of the local panel buy and contractor buy arrangements which makes the procurement process as simple as possible. Exciting Announcement for Cork City! As a dedicated member of the consultation team for Cork City Council - Comhairle Cathrach Chorcaí's Local Economic and Community Plan (LECP) 2024-2029, AXSChat is thrilled to present a visionary action plan focused on inclusion, disability support, and sustainability. The Local Economic and Community Plan emphasizes creating a welcoming, inclusive city where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. One of the primary goals is to ensure that individuals with disabilities are fully supported and integrated into our community. The plans outline several key initiatives to achieve this: 1-Accessibility Improvements: Enhancing public infrastructure to ensure full accessibility for people with disabilities. 2-Support Services: Expanding resources and support for individuals with disabilities to help them succeed in business, education, and daily life. 3-Awareness Campaigns: Promoting awareness about the rights and needs of people with disabilities fosters a more inclusive community. Sustainability is another cornerstone of the LECP. Cork City is committed to becoming a greener, more resilient urban environment. Key actions include: 1- Green Spaces Development: Creating and maintaining green areas for recreation and biodiversity. 2-Renewable Energy Promotion: Encouraging renewable energy sources and implementing energy-efficient practices. 3-Waste Reduction Programs: Introducing initiatives to reduce waste and promote recycling across the city. By integrating these values into our strategic objectives, we aim to build a city that grows economically and ensures the well-being and inclusion of all its residents. During the panel the topic of demarcation treatments between an in-boulevard bikeway and an adjacent sidewalk was raised (so picture a cycle track separated from the roadway by a raised curb and typically at the same grade as a sidewalk). This led to a discussion around the development of standards but also context and the need to not only design to minimums. What are your favourite examples of design guidance language that addresses context as well as a desired standard? The recent Ontario Traffic Council Protected Intersection Guide includes the use of ‘must’, ‘should’ and ‘consider.’

One of the greatest strengths of inclusionary housing is that is meets different local needs. There are successful examples of this happening in Queenstown where whānau and communities have homes that are affordable, accessible, have access to services, facilities, and infrastructure, that cater to cultural needs and diversity and offer security of tenure. Today marks the 75th anniversary of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949. This landmark legislation transformed how we connect with nature, creating our National Parks UK and securing access to the countryside through public rights of way. Today, we have 15 National Parks across the UK—vital for recreation, reflection, and well-being. Yet, 75 years on, challenges remain. Access to green space is still unequal. Recent data shows 1 in 3 people in England lack access to a green or blue space within 15 minutes of home, rising sharply in economically deprived areas. Public rights of way, the Act's cornerstone, remain critical for connecting communities to nature. However, barriers to access persist for disabled individuals. Natural England reports 20% of people face mobility challenges, while mental and learning disabilities further compound inequalities. A 2016 Mencap report found 1 in 3 adults with learning disabilities spends less than an hour outside daily. Mental health challenges, sensory impairments, and invisible barriers further limit access. If the Act’s legacy is to be fully realised, the countryside must be welcoming and accessible to all. Initiatives such as accessible trails and adaptive equipment are helping, but more is needed to ensure inclusivity. Encouragingly, the UK Government today announced new legislation to ensure protected landscapes are fit for the future. This will strengthen National Parks’ role in tackling the nature and climate crises while improving access for everyone. It’s a step forward, building on the spirit of the 1949 Act: a vision of connection and transformation. In the 1940s, John Dower envisioned access to uncultivated land—moors, downs, coastlines, and waterways—for all to enjoy. While the final Act fell short of his ambition, his vision remains powerful. As we face modern challenges, we must reimagine our National Parks as places where people and nature thrive together. Today is a time to celebrate this monumental Act but also a call to action. Let’s protect rights of way, expand access, and ensure everyone—regardless of ability, background, or income—can connect with nature. Our landscapes are not just national treasures. They are shared spaces that inspire, heal, and connect us. Across the UK, millions of people with physical and hidden disabilities face numerous challenges when accessing buildings and public spaces.   Currently one in four people in the UK are living with a disability with many more facing temporary mobility challenges. When combined with an aging population, it becomes clear that limited accessibility impacts a staggering portion of the population. The Crown Estate and Grosvenor, in conjunction with other major property owners, are urging the industry to unite in addressing this issue. We’ve published a joint report highlighting the need, barriers, benefits and recommendations for inclusive design in the built environment, and a range of open-source tools that businesses can implement to drive real, practical change. We have also founded a new working group – the Accessible and Inclusive Places Industry Group – to drive collaboration and change across the sector. What a seminal moment this was. The desire and determination to improve the accessibility and inclusivity of places and spaces was palpable among the built environment leaders in the room. And refreshingly the sense of collaboration and pulling together as a sector to realise meaningful and impactful change was strong too. I’m proud of the work Motionspot has done with The Crown Estate and Grosvenor over the last 2 years to help reach this point. And I laughed and nodded along to Ade Adepitan’s excellent keynote speech, especially: - the Colosseum and Pantheon embracing inclusive design and the ancient ethos of being accessible for all despite their age and heritage status - the desire to spare your friends/colleagues embarrassment for choosing a venue with poor access (hard relate) - the feeling when you need to be on a stage but there isn’t a ramp (also hard relate, the only difference is that when this has happened to me it wasn’t quite BAFTA like Ade!) and framing it not as a first world problem, but an important opportunity to be visible, represent diversity, and inspire the next generation - that inclusive design shouldn’t be a choice, it should be a basic human right As others have said, this is still very much the beginning, so let’s keep collaborating to make inclusive places and spaces that allow EVERYONE to thrive. #BeTheChange #InclusiveDesign #InclusivePlacesAndSpaces #DiversityAndInclusion Luke Kelly Matthew Burgess Sophie Morgan Holly Igglesden Ana Rita Martins Harriet Hawkes Bell Jane Wakiwaka James Manning Deborah Clark
