While Southern Africa has a wide road network serving the freight and logistics from ports to markets, these routes are severely emission intensive. In South Africa, an average long haul truck route from Durban to Johannesburg (570 km's) emits about one tonne of CO2 per day. As we look on global markets developments within sustainable freight and logistics, the United States just had the first Smart Charger Station being opened in California, near the busy ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The smart charger station has 65 chargers with the capacity to charge up to 200 vehicles a day. It is the largest operational charging site for electric heavy-duty freight in North America. #Bristol, #WestonsuperMare, #Minehead, #Taunton and #Basildon have been earmarked for the developments. An expansion of an existing deal between First Bus and rapid charging system provider Heliox, the new facilities form part of an £89illion initiative funded by the #publictransport operator and the #UK Government’s Zebra 2 funding programme. Collectively, the depots will be able to charge more than 190 vehicles simultaneously, making this a big step towards First Bus’ goal of running a fully #zeroemission fleet in the coming years. The operator already lays claim to the largest #electricbus charging depot, launched in #Glasgow before #COP26 in 2021, capable of charing 178 vehicles at once. Since then, a further eight depots have been brought online across the country, with facilities in #Scotland and #England. Summercourt, in #Cornwall, is counted among these, and also allows for vans and cars to be recharged, helping ease the strain on the public charging network. ‘The huge £89m investment from First Bus and support from the #ZEBRA 2 funding programme has enabled us to play a vital role in accelerating the transition to electric public transport, particularly in rural areas,’ said Stephen Wood, Heliox Country Manager UK & Ireland. ‘These new charging depots will be instrumental in achieving this goal.’ ‘Our partnership with Heliox has enabled us to electrify our depots and introduce cutting-edge electric buses, delivering cleaner air and a better passenger experience,’ added Faizan Ahmad, First Bus’ Decarbonisation Programme Director. ‘As a leader in #sustainable transport, we’re committed to working with both central and local governments to support national #decarbonisation goals and encourage more people to choose bus travel.’

Bus and Waterborne Transport - two sides of the Decarbonisation Coin It’s been a tough but rewarding four weeks for me. At the end of September I was in Kayseri, Turkey to participate in the #UITP Eurasia workshop and conference on Clean Buses. The focus was to share experiences from across the world about progress towards decarbonisation of buses. From the submissions at the three day event, much progress is being made, with varying levels of success depending on a variety of factors, such as jurisdiction sensitivity and, primarily, funding. A key element of the conference was the issue of battery specifications and the still unresolved issue of replacement of battery packs at the end of life. Today, I am rounding off a visit to Stockholm, this time joining a range of international stakeholders to discuss clean energy for Waterborne transport. We, members of the UITP waterborne transport committee were hosted jointly by local authority, Region Stockholm Stockholm, trailblazing electric hydrofoil boat builders #Candela and, #Torghatten, the operator of the autonomous electric ferry in Stockholm. I felt like I was back in Kayseri. This is because the issues confronting waterborne transport authorities and operators seem very similar to the problems highlighted by bus authorities and operators. Without going into detail, there are common concerns about strategic decision making by governments and their willingness to follow through on their commitments. There is also a concern about technical specifications on vessels/vehicles (read aloud Batteries!), operational requirements for electric fleet, financing and sustainability. These issues point to the need for collaboration across all modes of transport to address these issues especially end of life batteries and vehicles. Nevertheless it was good to see progress on decarbonisation of fossil fuel vessels as shown by Candela’s P12 electric hydrofoil ferry and Zeam’s autonomous ferry. The future that once loomed has now arrived. The journey towards greener public transportation has begun earnestly. And after all is said, it was a chilly but enjoyable visit to the famous Ice Bar in Stockholm’s Ice Hotel that rounded up an interesting visit to the capital of Scandinavia.
