I've been talking about 𝗦𝗼𝗳𝘁 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 a lot lately. Especially when it comes to the role of the humans in #SmartManufacturing and other industries that are heavily automated. Heck, I dedicated chapter 18 of "𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁'𝘀 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴" to the topic, www.smartstudentsguide.com The folks over at National Association of Colleges and Employers have released their yearly report, and this gem of a graph was included. Turns out, employers feel that new hires are behind their expectations when it comes to these essential soft skills. So, what can be done? The educational experience in nearly any field can be improved with project-based learning and scenarios that resemble the real workplace. Competitions are also a good activity, requiring a more holistic approach to getting things done, versus just learning about them. By the way, there are attempts to rename Soft Skills to something different. The term always seemed to be less important than 'hard skills' people are primarily studying. The first rename I heard was "Durable Skills" referring to the fact that these skills once learned tend to stay with you for your whole career. But "Essential Skills" seems to be pulling ahead, although I have now heard more than once the simple and obvious "Human Skills" being used. What do you call them?

The key to staying relevant is understanding that technical skills aren’t confined to traditional roles in IT or engineering. Increasingly, sectors such as healthcare, finance, and even the arts are integrating advanced technology, requiring professionals to upskill and reskill continually. This trend signals a shift from a fixed-skill mindset to a growth-oriented approach, where learning is lifelong. The demand isn’t merely for those who can write code or analyze data but for individuals who can blend technical prowess with creativity, critical thinking, and adaptability. #Stayrelevant #relevance #Upskill #reskill

Upskilling, reskilling, newskilling! Fashion comes and goes, but skills are critical to staying relevant in or entering the job market. There is a refreshing sense of urgency to refocus on skills and outcomes rather than pure knowledge dissemination in HEIs. eduALTO and Speechsquare founder, Dirk Hopfl, attended the QS HigherEd Summit to talk about the need for upskilling within Higher Education, upskilling to improve graduate outcomes, and the support that technology can provide. As we have ongoing conversations about closing the #skillsgap in today’s workforce, let’s continue to acknowledge the importance of “soft skills”—or as the author of this Fast Company author likes to call them: skills. I agree that it may be time to do away with the division of skills into two distinct categories (“hard” for technical know-how; ”soft” for the more intangible qualities like #creativity) particularly when they are both crucial for the #futureofwork. https://lnkd.in/gXMSKkDi

A beautiful line caught my attention today. It's true that our job titles and responsibilities may change with the evolving demands of the industry. However, one thing that will always keep us valuable is experiential learning, especially in emerging technologies and experiences. It's a skillset that will always be in demand, no matter how much customer needs change. Keep learning and growing, and lets always stay in demand. #experientiallearning #emergingtechnologies #professionaldevelopment

Strategic Cybersecurity Leader | Cybersecurity Instructor | Minimizing Cyber Risk by Leading Fortune 500 Enterprise Security & Risk Oversight
5moThank you for sharing Mike and fully agree. In fact, per ISACA's State of Cybersecurity 2023 Global Update on Workforce Efforts, Resources and Cyberoperations Report, one employer survey question asked was, "What are the biggest skills gaps you see in today's cybersecurity professionals?" Soft skills (e.g., communication, flexibility, leadership) topped the list.
