It took Wells Fargo four days to realize that one of their employees had passed away at their desk. ______________________________________ Listen closely. You are not defined by your job. You are not the endless meetings, the late-night emails, or the deadlines that blur into one another. You are not the promotion that slipped away or the title on your LinkedIn profile. You are not the hours spent tethered to a desk, counting down to the weekend like a prisoner to freedom. You are not your boss's expectations, and you are certainly not the performance reviews that attempt to quantify your value. You are the moments you spend away from the screen, the breaths you take when you step outside, and the laughter shared with friends when you finally allow yourself to relax. You are the total of your experiences, the love you give, and the happiness you pursue. So take that break. Step away from the grind for a moment and reconnect with who you truly are. Because in the end, your life is yours—and no one else can live it for you.

This day, July 10, 2024, marks one year serving as the Analyst for Scotiabank’s Market Risk team! I am grateful for the perspective, knowledge, challenges and opportunities this role has offered me. Over this past year, the insights I’ve gained into risk and the role it plays in the bank, to work-life balance and building professional relationships are invaluable. The analyst role permits me to take many of the concepts from my degree and apply them in the real world - to impact decision making based both on historical data and simulations, for example. Some of the key lessons thus far that I hold dear are: 1. It’s ok to not know everything. It allows room for grounded growth and for healthy curiousity. 2. There is always room for improvement, a process completed more efficiently, a report made more accurate or a metric more reflective. 3. Ask questions and have conversations! Your experienced teammates have a wealth of knowledge that is available in an immediate and human way. 4. Make it a point to understand the key tasks of your desk. Not only does it help you, the owner of the task, to establish efficacy and reliability in what you do but also equips you to use your budding skills to bridge any gaps or develop additional areas of consideration. 5. Take a chance on yourself. Be open to learning new concepts, exploring theories and deepening understanding of topics you already know. Develop new skills and test them on the job, find areas to add value and integrate yourself in your role. I sincerely look forward to continued growth with this amazing team and beyond.
