Watch the video below… Attentional blindness can be a killer in sports coaching… When you fall in love with one approach, one method, one theory, one tool...attentional blindness can set in… When you experience attentional blindness you risk closing the door on applicable solutions from other approaches, methods, theories, tools... It may be important to stay open-minded to multiple theories and approaches in coaching… Sports coaches would do well to keep their mind open…and to continually ask why (“Why am I doing what I’m doing”)…

Unique and Simple Tip 💡 Out of the 📦 To create a positive and enthusiastic session for your players, get down as early as possible before the session starts, I’d recommend setting up area and practices first, but then get a ball and have a kick about with someone! Simple as that⚽️ Here you’ll see me and Alberto (A great friend of mine and fellow coach at Challenger Sports ‘23) getting down prior to our clinics and having a simple game of ‘Numbered keepy uppies!’ I think we will let the video show you who won🤪 What this does for me is priceless: 1️⃣ Creates the good vibes and this makes us pass that ‘good feel’ to the players on arrival. 2️⃣ Creates a great team camaraderie between the coaches so we work as well as we can together to create/deliver the best session we can for our players! 3️⃣ Reminds us of our passion for the game we love⚽️. Reminder to pass that infectious passion through the energy we create in the session. 4️⃣ MOST IMPORTANT - Takes us back to when we were kids and we played with no pressure and worries. Just played for Fun. This sets a great foundation for me that I know the session will be created to allow mistakes and use them as positive learning environments. The most important thing for success to win in sports is not culture or coaching or the support. It is a mix of: Recruiting Talented Athletes + Recruiting High Character Athletes. Don’t fool yourselves. The training plan or how much money you have in your program cannot make a dent if you don’t have the right people on the bus.

As the dust begins to settle on the Samoan Test Series, I’ve finally had a moment to reflect. The last three weeks have been intense, enjoyable, and full of challenges that I embraced. People often ask me: Did you enjoy playing more than coaching? My answer is always straightforward—absolutely not. For me, it’s all about coaching. And not just on the field, but the full 24 hours a day that it requires. That is what being a true leader is all about. It's all about connecting with your team (in my case, unbelievable athletes), getting them to fully buy into the game plan, daily behaviours, public interaction, and my non-negotiable standards. The winning results are incredible to see, but just as important are the behind-the-scenes acknowledgments from hotel and stadium staff, RFL personnel, and our transport teams who praise our players’ conduct. It’s not just about winning a match; it’s about carrying impeccable behaviour every second of every day in our England camp. Each morning, our players woke up to a bold message:  "Anything you do is everything you do." We didn’t just say it. We unpacked it. We detailed what it meant, and only then did we live by it. A moment that will always stand out was after the Wigan Test. Despite being physically battered, my players stayed outside for 30 to 40 minutes, signing autographs and posing for photos with young, aspiring rugby players. That’s a memory those kids will hold forever. I know, because I was one of them years ago at Central Park, inspired by my heroes.
