In May 2021, Cyclone Yaas struck the east coast of India, bringing wind gusts of up to 140 kilometers per hour (87 mph). By May 23, it had intensified to the equivalent of a Category 1 Atlantic hurricane before making landfall at Balshwar on May 25 at its peak strength. The cyclone generated destructive storm surges, resulting in widespread flooding and displacing tens of thousands of individuals from their homes. During such weather emergencies, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data proves invaluable. Unlike other sensors, SAR can penetrate cloud cover, providing a clear view of ground conditions. Once captured, SAR data requires processing and analysis to extract meaningful insights. Utilized ENVI® SARscape® software for the flood analysis following Cyclone Yaas. ENVI SARscape is a premier SAR processing and analysis tool globally recognized for its ability to derive actionable information from SAR data. For this analysis, Sentinel-1 data captured before and after the cyclone (on May 17 and May 29, respectively) was employed. The process involved creating a SAR composite image, followed by the extraction of flooded areas and conducting change detection analysis. In addition to SAR analysis, this tutorial also discusses the methodology of flood analysis using multispectral data in ArcGIS Pro. Over the last decade alone, floods have caused billions of dollars in property damage. When heavy rainfall or storm surges are predicted for a community, rich geospatial data (for example, flood depth, ground elevation, and public assets) and spatial analysis are used to analyze the impact of flooding and produce a series of flood impact maps. #Flood impact maps communicate the extent of flooding events and provide valuable information about the affected areas and the potential risks and hazards to government officials and the public. #ArcGIS provides tools and workflows to analyze and visualize the impact of flooding events. #Arc Scene is a tool in #Gis that helps us visualize the impact of flooding.
