As Black History Month concludes, I want to remind everyone that it is important to center the achievements and elevate the voices of Black people and other marginalized communities year round. Although we have made many achievements, we still have much work to do as it relates to centering equity in our practices, increasing diversity and diverse representation without tokenism, and promoting inclusion with intentionality to achieve authentic spaces of belonging. Over the course of this month, we all were reminded that racial biases are alive and prevalent, as evidenced across numerous media platforms that purported Black people will align with individuals and ideologies due their affinity for sneakers and familiarity with mug shots. As people, we must acknowledge that we all have biases. However, let us not overlook that we all have work to do related to managing our biases so that we do not offend or cause harm to others. Lastly, I want to give a shout-out my colleague Lydiah Igweh and her team at Race Forward Pod based in the U.K. for inviting me late last year to contribute to her podcast. The episode recently aired and I want to share it here with fellow DEI practitioners and those who support DEI initiatives as encouragement to keep forging ahead despite the current challenges. #onward #efworld https://buff.ly/48YzfTL

🎉 Happy Black History Month to our UK Atollians! 🖤 This October, we celebrated Black History Month in the UK with pride and purpose. Our mission goes beyond a single month—it’s about ongoing growth, learning, and embracing diversity as a strength all year round. Daniel Adjei and Laura O. joined forces on Atolls Radio to dive deep into what Black History Month truly means and to open up conversations on key topics like unconscious bias, allyship, and the importance of embedding these initiatives into our culture every day. At Atolls, #UnitedByDifferences isn’t just a value; it’s our commitment to building a workplace where everyone feels heard, seen, and empowered. Addressing unconscious bias and strengthening allyship are essential steps in ensuring that everyone can thrive and contribute in an environment that respects and values their unique perspectives. Let’s keep these conversations going! Every dialogue, every shared experience, and every act of allyship makes us stronger as a team and as a community. Black History Month may be celebrated in October in the UK, but the dedication to inclusivity and understanding is something we carry forward daily. #StrongerTogether #UnitedByDifferences #BlackHistoryMonth #Atolls
One of the things I love most about Black History Month is the opportunity to tell encouraging stories. However, raising awareness about the richness of black history and our impact isn’t just something I want to do once a year, giving recognition, exposure and opportunity to people of a minority is something I believe we can do throughout the whole year and in many ways. I was privileged to join episode 4 of Atolls radio to talk about what Black History Month means, why it’s important to celebrate and a few other interesting topics that give light to how we can build a truly diverse work culture. One of our core values is #UnitedByDifferences, and this really resonates with me because it reminds me that representation matters within a company. Representation and diversity as a whole can have a huge impact on the success of a business and the satisfaction of employees when they feel heard and included. Have a listen to the podcast at the link below, share it with a colleague and start a dialogue around embracing Black History Month in the workplace! https://lnkd.in/emEwBJFw Happy Black History Month to you all! 🖤

What does "Reclaiming Narratives" mean to you? #BlackHistoryMonth #LinkedInNewsUK To me, this theme is about giving voice to the stories that have been overlooked or misrepresented, allowing Black individuals to take ownership of their own histories, achievements, and identities. It’s an opportunity to honour the contributions of those who have been marginalised or erased from the mainstream narrative, and to highlight the rich and diverse experiences that continue to shape our communities today. It’s important because these untold stories shape not only the Black community but society as a whole. By reclaiming these narratives, we challenge stereotypes, dismantle biases, and broaden our understanding of history. It helps ensure that future generations grow up with a more inclusive and accurate view of the world. Reclaiming these stories isn’t just about correcting history, it’s about empowering future generations to see themselves as part of the fabric of society, fostering pride in their heritage, and ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard.

As we observe Black History Month this October, the theme of reclaiming narratives becomes profoundly significant. This month is not just a time to remember historical figures and events; it's an opportunity to challenge the prevailing narratives that have often marginalised Black voices and experiences. As a Black manager at work, I see this as a vital moment to encourage our community to share our stories, embrace our identities, and foster an environment where every narrative is valued. “Reclaiming narratives” allows us to reshape how history is told and understood. For too long, mainstream narratives about Black history have been dominated by a focus on oppression and struggle, often side-lining the resilience, creativity, and contributions of Black individuals and communities. By reclaiming our stories, we can highlight the richness of our experiences, celebrating achievements in arts, sciences, politics, and everyday life. This month, I am encouraging you to share your own experiences and personal stories —whether it's the legacy of your ancestors, cultural traditions, or personal journeys. Creating a platform for these stories can help break down barriers, foster empathy, and build stronger connections among colleagues and friends. Let’s use this month to uplift one another, celebrate our identities, and inspire future generations to reclaim our stories. In solidarity and celebration. TA one love! #blackhistorymonth #Newham #reclaimingnarratives

While Black History Month is an important month for shining the spotlight, let’s not forget that Black achievements, contributions, and stories enrich our lives 365 days a year. Let's commit to reading a book like this, watching a documentary, listening to a podcast, or attending a lecture about Black history continuously, not just once a year.
