CoSPIRIT launched: towards a new generation of science advisors 📝 How can scientists effectively apply their knowledge in politics and policy? The new CoSPIRIT project of Tilburg University offers a solution with the Stevin Fellowship. This unique program allows young academics to gain first-hand experience on how scientific insights are used by politicians and civil servants. 🤝 The first fellow, Alena van Geen, has just started at the House of Representatives’ Research and Analysis Department (DAO). Her participation in the fellowship brings science and politics closer together, contributing to stronger collaboration between the two worlds. 💡 Over the next five years, CoSPIRIT will guide at least two fellows annually within the Dutch knowledge and advisory landscape, with the goal of continuing to bridge this important gap. CoSPIRIT is the result of The Stevin prize that was awarded to Prof. Corien Prins for her contribution to both law and (information) technology, and policy development. The fourth Knowledge Beyond Boundaries, LSE's interdisciplinary student research conference, has officially begun! We are excited to be welcoming over 100 presenters, whose research explores the LSE Festival theme of Power and Politics, and over 200 attendees joining us either online or in-person. Eighteen LSE departments are represented here today, and we are also joined by twelve students from CIVICA partner institutions. We are proud to be offering a friendly, inclusive space for young academics to present their work and build their networks. One of our presenters today is Lisa Mandal, who is presenting her research on young female Formula 1 fan identity. Lisa was encouraged to submit an abstract to present her work at this year's conference following her work as a student ambassador at Knowledge Beyond Boundaries 2023. She had these words to share about why this experience motivated her to become a conference presenter: "Working on the behind-the-scenes of this conference taught me how academic conferences can actually be really fun and that research need not be daunting at all. So, this year, I was motivated to take it up a notch and submit my own abstract for the conference! I’m not going to lie - It’s quite fulfilling to see your own name on the presenters’ conference programme that you yourself had worked on last year." Really thought provoking talks at the The Foundation For Science and Technology event on Safeguarding Trust in Science tonight. It was good to hear perspectives from different disciplines as well as from academia, the civil service, and publishers. I was particularly interested in the idea of putting humanities at the heart of meta-science so we don’t lose sight of the human interactions that make up the systems in which science is performed and produced, and the call to embrace the broader notion of science and to enthusiastically explore all the complexity that comes with that. Reflections on trust, what we trust, and who we trust were also central. The role of embedding and embodying research integrity in government to improve the sense of trust in policy makers was really interesting - and encouraging. At GuildHE Research we work with our members to put research integrity at the core of their research environments; it is so vital to being trusted by others to both collaborate on and to lead research activity. We use our role as a signatory to the Concordat to Support Research Integrity to bring perspectives from specialist institutions and teaching-intensive research active institutions to these debates. https://lnkd.in/eRwvXw-H #researchintegrity #trustinscience

#research #roundtable #evaluation LIEPP is pleased to convene the roundtable: "Imagining the future of evaluation" bit.ly/3Ujn9Pi 📅 May, 16th. 4pm-6pm. (Paris time). 📌 Programme and registration: bit.ly/3Ujn9Pi In this exceptional LIEPP event, five leaders and internationally acclaimed scholars in evaluation will reflect on the future of the field. What new methods and approaches should be promoted? How is evaluation different from social science methods applied to social and economic issues – and should it be any different? What are the major institutional and political challenges to the development of evaluation and the promotion of its use in policymaking and within civil society? What should be the role of evaluation in democracy, and what practical tools can it rely on to fulfil this role? These are some of the questions which will be addressed in this roundtable. With the intervention of Thomas Cook (Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law), Sandra Mathison (The University of British Columbia), Rebecca Maynard (The Graduate School at Penn State), Raymond Pawson (University of Leeds) and Laura Peck (MEF Associates). The roundtable will be facilitated by Anne Revillard (Sciences Po, CRIS, LIEPP). #research #publicpolicies #evaluation #international #socialscience #methods #economy #democracy #politicalscience Sciences Po Sciences Po School of Research Association Sciences Po Research Quadrant Conseil Société Française de l'Evaluation EvalPartners European Evaluation Society (EES) Anne Revillard Thomas Delahais Valérie Pattyn Ana Manzano Antonin Thyrard Douglas Besharov Julia Littell Rebecca A. Thanks to Ending Loneliness Together for hosting such a thought provoking symposium this week on how we can address loneliness and social isolation across Australia. A few (of the many!) reflections from the day, including from the policy and social prescribing panels I was grateful to be part of, include: > the need for prevention - how can we create inclusive and caring communities with places and spaces where people can connect, including connecting with our natural world - let's focus upstream to create lasting change > financial stress and hardship is one of, if not the strongest factor in driving loneliness - how can we drive change and opportunity at a system and individual level to reduce persistent loneliness and social isolation? > the importance of supporting life transitions - including from primary school to high school, into adulthood, parenthood, retirement etc > empowering communities as decision makers to drive social connection and inclusion initiatives > the critical role that communities play in social prescribing - without thriving, inclusive and sustainable communities, social prescribing cannot succeed - how can we build this into models or complementary initiatives > the important of embedding lived and living experience in policy and program design (Local Connections - a social prescribing initiative is one example of this) > the importance of authenticity and storytelling with those around us to create space for connections and reaching out/in through life's ups and downs > there is a role for individuals, communities, business, health and social care services, private industries and governments to play in driving change, but for effective change we must work together. Thanks again to all of the speakers, especially to Grace Martin and Phil McAuliffe, and organisers for the richness of content. It's great to see the commitment to connecting and working together to drive change. A shout out to some of my fellow Victorian's who also attended and who are doing great work in this space including Sharon Clifford Liam McIntyre Sage Saegenschnitter

Dr Ilias Krystallis has contributed to a new report on the value of academic advisers in local and regional authorities. His recent policy fellowship with the Greater London Authority was selected as a case study to demonstrate the impact of his research in developing a knowledge brokerage function for the London Research and Policy Partnership. Dr Krystallis said: “ During my policy fellowship with the Greater London Authority, I conducted research into the field of knowledge exchange, specifically examining the evolution of knowledge brokerage within a collaborative partnership between the University of London and the Greater London Authority. Our findings can provide policymakers with valuable insights to inform the development of policies and interventions that are more closely aligned with the natural evolution of knowledge brokerage networks. This, in turn, has the potential to enhance the effectiveness of policies and practices.” Read more and get the report: https://lnkd.in/eqJDv258 Read the research: https://lnkd.in/eV_6E4g9 #knowledgebroker #knowledgebrokerage #builtenvironment

One of the key questions that we hear in relation to research-policy engagement is what exactly might that look like in practice. Maynooth University is running a series of talks over the coming months to answer that question with colleagues from across the civil service and academia sharing their lived experience of engagement. #science4policy #Impact2030
Professor Mark Boyle and Seán Ó Foghlú of the Maynooth University Social Sciences Institute, in conjunction with Maynooth University Research Development Office, are organising a series of 5 seminars in September, October and November. The seminar series explores practices in Research for Policy, giving researchers from Maynooth University and the policy-makers in Government Departments that they have been working with an opportunity to discuss their experiences of working together and to reflect on what they have achieved and what they have learned. The seminars will all be held in a hybrid fashion - in person in the Maynooth University Social Sciences Institute (on the top floor of the Iontas building) and online. Tea/coffee will be available in advance of the seminars.
