Jim Maxwell, a towering figure in deep foundation construction, recently passed, leaving behind an indelible mark on the AEC sector. As chair of Hub Foundation Co., Inc., Jim transformed a family business into a leader, pioneering the adoption of advanced drilling technologies in the United States. His foresight led to the acquisition of the first European drill rig sold in the U.S., paving the way for future advancements in our field. Under his leadership, Hub Foundation not only expanded its service offerings but also completed critical projects like the Boston Big Dig and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Green Line Extension. Jim’s commitment to collaboration extended beyond his own firm. He generously shared his resources with others in the industry, fostering an environment that prioritizes collective success over competition. His spirit of mentorship and dedication to the advancement of students in engineering reflect his understanding that the growth of the industry relies on knowledge transfer and innovation. This Engineer Rose from a Department Manager  To a President In 5 short years! Here's How He Did It: In the late 1990s, I met an emerging Geotechnical Engineer ready to step up. I helped him find his first leadership role, a Geotechnical Department Management role. Then for the same firm he quickly became a Regional Manager, overseeing 3 operations in Southern California! A handful of years later he became the President of one of California's oldest and most prestigious geotechnical firms. He had every credential under the sun - an MS Degree, PE, GE, MBA… But his secret weapon was his exceptionally high emotional intelligence. He was: A master at building relationships Skilled at forming strong teams Adept at understanding people I've met some exceptionally gifted engineers who are technically sound. But the common theme among top-performing engineers who ascend to leadership positions… Is their ability to effectively communicate, collaborate with teams, and get people emotionally invested in a mission. So, my tip today: If you want to grow faster, double down on Emotional intelligence (EQ).
