Over the last two weekends, I built a new project at two different hackathons: the cognition hackathon at betaworks and the ai agents @ fractal tech. During these hackathon I decided to focus on one project near and dear to me: an ai agent that could customer service for me so I didn't have to talk on the phone. 🚀 LeetCode Day 27 - Efficient Square Root Calculation using Binary Search! 📈 Today’s problem was about calculating the integer square root of a number. 🧠 Instead of going for a linear approach, I solved it using Binary Search to efficiently find the square root in logarithmic time! ⚡ 🔍 Solution Breakdown: -If the number is 0 or 1, the result is the number itself. -For larger numbers, the solution utilizes Binary Search: -Start with a range from 0 to x. -Compute the mid-point, check if mid * mid is less than or equal to x. -Adjust the search range accordingly to narrow down the possible square root. -The final result is the largest integer whose square is less than or equal to x. 💡 Why Binary Search? Instead of linearly testing numbers from 0 to x, Binary Search dramatically reduces the number of checks by halving the search space in every step, making it much faster for large inputs. 📈 Time Complexity: O(log x): This is because we’re halving the search space each time with Binary Search. 💾 Space Complexity: O(1): We are only using a few extra variables for our calculations (low, high, mid), so space consumption is constant. ✨ Key Concepts: Binary Search, Integer Square Root, Preventing Overflow 🔧 Efficient algorithms like Binary Search help in solving problems faster, especially when working with large inputs. It's already difficult to evaluate a framework and adopt it in enterprise settings, the constant hype and trends in GenAI makes the task even more difficult. Generally, you want to know: - How difficult is it to learn, get started, and build a proof-of-concept with some value? - Is it reliable enough to eventually bring my application to production? - How can it handle changing requirements as my project evolves? Haystack (deepset) and Burr (DAGWorks Inc.) is a great pair of tools to launch your next RAG, LLM chatbot, or agentic project. Together, you can quickly build a modular app from ready-made components and have access to useful developer tools (annotations, logging, tracing, debugger). A friend of mine, Richard Kalmeijer, pointed me to a recent article in the Economist, "What happened to the Artificial Intelligence revolution", with the bold statement 'So far the technology has had almost no economic impact'. At COERA we also continuously explore the potential benefits of AI/ML in our software engineering practices, see the mentioned article in the post.
