Health Services Daily The long-awaited scope of practice review has arrived, outlining an “ambitious program” of reforms. While the federal health minister, Mark Butler, seems onside, does he have the gumption to face “turf wars” and “political fights” to enact implementation? Last August saw the inauguration of the Unleashing the potential of our health workforce – scope of practice review. Today, lead reviewer Professor Mark Cormack and his team released the review’s final report, including 18 recommendations. #healthreform #scopeofpractice
We need to enable innovative models of care and use of all practitioners scope of practice to unleash true health reform. Doing the same thing and pump more money into a system that is 40 years old and not fit for purpose. The consultation process has been extensive and researched widely. We need to see that all practitioners can interact with each other and it doesn’t need to be under the same rein to make a multidisciplinary team. It needs the digital infrastructure, regulations , legislations and systems modernised. Australian Physiotherapy Association

1wThe purpose of the review is to shift the current fee for service model of care towards a capped funding model similar to the NHS. All this talk about extending scope of practice of nurse practitioners and pharmacists to fill the roles of GPs is all about cost cutting at the end of the day. The NHS is at breaking point because it undervalued GPs and is clearly a system that doesn’t work- yet our government under the guise of “scope of practice” review is clearly determined to turn our current healthcare system into the NHS- go figure!
