Two posts in one - some writing about what the process of making my first picture book was like, and also a plug for the book that is now at the printer, and for which is on pre-order for just a few more days. It’s looking like this first run is gonna sell out and not sure when I’ll be able to print a second run so if you want one, grab one! Thanks to everyone whose championed and supported this so far. Here is some writing that goes more in depth: https://lnkd.in/gjY4kQx4

First, a shout out to the project managers I've worked with who DO get security (you know who you are.) Second, while there is certainly a subset of PMs (and people in general) who will ignore security for the sake of timeliness, I believe it is the job of security leaders to meet project managers where they are. PMs have timelines and requirements just like we do, and all too often security is a roadblock or mystery. If you are working with a PM who routinely causes problems for the security team, you should meet with them and explain some of the key things they can do to help. · Yes, I want to know about a project at the beginning even if you aren’t sure it is going to get off the ground. I can provide valuable feedback on if it sounds like we might have security or compliance issues down the line – and I can get my team to start working on that now to avoid causing issues with your timeline later. · Share with them some of the key issues that plague projects later in their life cycle that the PM can be on the lookout for to make sure security is engaged. While non-comprehensive, this may include places where PII or PCI data is involved, when the project is externally facing, or if it is a completely new platform that hasn’t been used by the organization previously. · Work with your team, the security team, to make sure they understand that (most) businesses aren’t in the business of being secure, they are in the business of being profitable. Good solutions that enable the business are better than perfect solutions which will get ignored and cause political problems down the line. Think about the project managers and other teams as your customers and track metrics, have SLAs, and strive to provide them with the best service possible. Quickly responding to questions, addressing issues caused by tools, or providing guidance is a great way to foster collaboration and you will find that other parts of the organization will be more willing to engage with your team over time.
