The ability to drive ancillary revenue separates the most profitable travel companies from the others - as it offers customers the opportunity to gain more value which can be sold at much higher margin than flights. Having a best-in-class car rental proposition is an obvious example- customers are already purchasing elsewhere and research shows that many of them would be happy to buy via their airline partner. But not all propositions are created equal! Why Haven't Airlines Cracked Interline Ticketing with NDC Yet? A humorous take on a serious question. Ah, interline ticketing—a topic that sparks joy & dread in the hearts of airline IT departments. With NDC (New Distribution Capability) promising to revolutionize how we book flights, you’d think interline ticketing would be a piece of cake by now. But here we are, still trying to get airlines to play nicely together in the sandbox. So, why hasn’t it happened yet? The “Herding Cats” Problem: Getting multiple airlines to agree on the same technical standards, processes, and data formats is like trying to organize a group of cats. Each airline has its own systems, priorities, and quirks. And let’s face it, cats don’t like to share! The “Who’s on First?” Dilemma: Interline agreements involve complex revenue sharing, passenger data exchange, and operational coordination. Everyone’s trying to figure out who’s responsible for what, and in the meantime, the passenger is left wondering who’s flying the plane. Standards Are Great… Until They’re Not: While NDC is all about standardization, the reality is that different airlines interpret these standards in slightly different ways. It’s like everyone is cooking from the same recipe but adding their own secret ingredients. The result? A stew that doesn’t always taste the same. But don’t lose hope! The industry is making strides, and with each NDC version, we’re getting closer to making interline ticketing as seamless as booking a single airline. It’s a journey, and like any good trip, it’s taking a bit longer than expected—but we’ll get there. 🙂 So, here’s to the dream of booking a multi-airline itinerary without a headache, and to all the airline IT folks out there who are making it happen (or at least trying to).
