Arizona State University’s charter is only 46 words long, but it’s a bold promise that’s a model for the reinvention of #highereducation. "ASU is a comprehensive public research university, measured not by whom it excludes, but by whom it includes and how they succeed; advancing research and discovery of public value; and assuming fundamental responsibility for the economic, social, cultural and overall health of the communities it serves." Every #university in the country could swap out their name with 'ASU' on the charter and make the same bold promise. #highered #publicgood #economicmobility #socialmobility

Happy National Higher Education Day! Today we celebrate the importance of higher education and the opportunities it provides for personal and professional growth. One key aspect of modern education is designing for flexibility and personalization. Gone are the days of one-size-fits-all space- now, students can decide how to use thier space for their specific needs. There is a renewed focus on connection.

Is this "innovative" or just going back to the roots and mission of higher education? Universities (even smaller, teaching focused ones) struggle with this because tuition is not enough to cover the costs? Athletics, well, that's a quagmire in and of itself. Research agendas - another costly quagmire. Students will attend the institution if they see a clear and linear pathway to a career. More "innovative" models connecting curriculum to industry and community partners, more practical and experiential learning models, project based and hands on learning models, etc... Have to make it relevant and meaningful. These things don't have to be mutually exclusive with all the other aspects, but most higher ed institutions treat them that way.
