It has been a common refrain lately that says "𝙂𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝘼𝙄 𝙙𝙚𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙤𝙣 𝙜𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙄𝘼", but few have provided examples. This certainly will. I've been noodling on the potential convergence of content (document) modeling and knowledge modeling. Information Architects (generally) haven't considered KM modeling as they design content models, but the emergence of neuro-symbolic AI RAG to construct deterministic solutions might open things up to some degree of convergence. Here are some of my latest thoughts and musings on the topic.
As always, another interesting post. The *bringing context into the equation* conversation is happening now and many folks are just starting to have the a-ha moments many of your readers had much earlier. The good news is there is substantial momentum in this arena. Thanks again for your thoughtful posts and for sharing your musings with the community.
We use a similar approach in my team. Knowledge domain modelling and content modelling are interwoven layers/disciplines in our omnichannel content development process.
Michael Iantosca IA is an essential part of KM bringing context to content. Content modeling is an major component of IA in which I teach in the CKS-IA course with KM Institute (KMI). Very good article and I can readily see the application to AI/RAG.
Thank you for this very interesting post
Michael Iantosca - We should have a chat. I've been working on a foundational model that works exactly the same way on structured, semi-structured, and 'unstructured' information for a while now.
It was inevitable that we would need to bring KM and IA together. I find the hybrid solution to be extremely interesting. As soon as we started talking about DITA specializations, my mind immediately jumped to “Danger! Danger! Maintenance issue Will Robinson!” That said, the precision you can get using specializations might outweigh the pain of maintaining them. I like your idea of starting with the basics, seeing what happens, and adding as needed. I’m staying tuned with keen interest!
