#ResearchSpotlight: Shifting agricultural research systems needs in the face of the climate crisis 🌐 Climate change poses a significant threat to global food security, especially in the Global South where poverty and malnutrition are on the rise. World leaders have emphasized the urgency of adopting climate-resilient agriculture by 2030. However, achieving this goal requires a change in research approaches, moving towards transdisciplinary collaboration that incorporates social sciences and indigenous knowledge. This transformation is essential for addressing power imbalances, building trustful partnerships, and fostering genuine transformative change in agricultural research and development systems. Heavy rainfall and floods since March have devastated East Africa, submerging thousands of acres of cropland and killing livestock, leaving the region on the brink of a food crisis. Kenya alone has lost nearly 10,000 livestock and over 41,000 acres of vital cropland. Floods have also contaminated clean water sources and destroyed crucial infrastructure, severing supply chains and market access. The outlook over the coming months is bleak with more heavy rains forecasted. We need immediate funding to support #refugee-hosting areas, enhance climate-resilient agricultural practices, and ensure communities can adapt to climate change. East Africa warned of impending food shortage after floods devastate croplands, kill livestock (downtoearth.org.in) Andrew Harper; David Mondorf; Houssam حسام Chahine شاهين

Africa's drylands are degrading, pushing farmers and communities into poverty. But hope is growing. Restoring and protecting ecosystems is essential to tackle the #ClimateCrisis. It will secure the future for the millions of people who depend on land and forests for food and income. This film shows how Trees for the Future is empowering farmers to transform their land and fight climate change with the creation of forest gardens. We're proud to be an actor for the UN Decade for Ecosystem Restoration. Find out more about how we contribute 👇 https://lnkd.in/d67b4uk UN Environment Programme
