What is cloud native? Below is a diagram showing the evolution of architecture and processes since the 1980s. Organizations can build and run scalable applications on public, private, and hybrid clouds using cloud native technologies. This means the applications are designed to leverage cloud features, so they are resilient to load and easy to scale. Cloud native includes 4 aspects: 🔹 1. Development process This has progressed from waterfall to agile to DevOps. 🔹 2. Application Architecture The architecture has gone from monolithic to microservices. Each service is designed to be small, adaptive to the limited resources in cloud containers. 🔹 3. Deployment & packaging The applications used to be deployed on physical servers. Then around 2000, the applications that were not sensitive to latency were usually deployed on virtual servers. With cloud native applications, they are packaged into docker images and deployed in containers. 🔹 4. Application infrastructure The applications are massively deployed on cloud infrastructure instead of self-hosted servers.

What Makes a Good PaaS? 🚀 A Platform as a Service (PaaS) needs to deliver more than basic infrastructure and scaling capabilities. After working with various PaaS solutions, I've identified these critical technical requirements that separate robust platforms from basic offerings: 1. Developer Experience 💻 The deployment pipeline should minimize cognitive overhead while maximizing control. This means proper Git integration, environment parity, and automation capabilities. Key requirements include: - Clean deployment pipeline with minimal configuration but clear visibility into the process - Well-documented API and CLI that enable automation of routine tasks - Local development environment that matches production, eliminating "works on my machine" issues - Reliable rollback mechanisms for when deployments go wrong 2. Scalability 📈 Scaling should be automatic and predictable, with clear metrics driving decisions. Essential scaling features include: - Horizontal scaling based on configurable metrics like CPU, memory, and custom indicators - Intelligent load balancing with proper failover mechanisms - Database connection pooling to prevent connection exhaustion during traffic spikes 3. Security 🔒 Security should be comprehensive but not impede development velocity. Critical security features: - Automated SSL/TLS certificate management and renewal - Network isolation between services with configurable policies - Regular, automated security patches with clear change logs - Container vulnerability scanning integrated into the deployment pipeline 4. Cost Management 💸 Cost visibility and control should be built into the platform: - Detailed resource usage monitoring down to the service level - Clear per-service cost breakdown for accurate project billing - Usage-based pricing that scales with your actual needs - Configurable resource limits and proactive alerts before costs spike 5. Technical Support 🛠️ Support should help solve problems, not create new ones: - Production debugging tools that provide meaningful insights - Performance profiling capabilities at both application and infrastructure levels - Centralized log aggregation with proper retention policies - Integrated error tracking with useful stack traces and context 6. Tool Integration 🔧 The platform should work seamlessly with your existing toolchain: - Flexible CI/CD pipeline hooks that don't lock you into specific tools - Comprehensive monitoring API endpoints for custom dashboards - Automated database backup and restore procedures - Custom domain management with proper DNS integration A good PaaS reduces operational overhead without sacrificing the flexibility needed for complex applications. It should feel like an extension of your development workflow rather than a constraint. What technical features do you prioritize when evaluating PaaS solutions? #PaaS #DevOps #CloudArchitecture #TechInfrastructure

Nutanix Cloud Native! NKP targets a new class of Kubernetes Platform Engineering teams to bring enterprise resilience, day-2 operations, and compliance to modern applications at scale. For example, customers can manage clusters running containers on Nutanix on-premises and clusters running in the public cloud with one single pane of glass, cutting down on complexity and operating costs. It also enables organizations to manage clusters running in non-Nutanix environments, including popular public cloud Kubernetes services, as well as both connected and air-gapped environments. This helps customers innovate faster by removing the hurdles in adopting cloud native architectures for their applications. "One of the biggest challenges organizations face with cloud native applications is deploying, securing and managing the rapidly expanding fleets of Kubernetes clusters being deployed on premises and in public clouds and NKP simplifies this," said Tobi Knaup, GM Cloud Native at Nutanix. "This work directly supports our vision, along with Project Beacon, to enable customers to run modern applications and their data anywhere." https://lnkd.in/gDyFE2t8

💡Cloud-Native Applications Cloud-native applications are designed to take full advantage of cloud computing frameworks. They are built using a set of principles and practices that allow for scalability, resilience, and flexibility. Here are some key characteristics: 1. Microservices Architecture: Applications are composed of loosely coupled services that can be developed, deployed, and scaled independently. 2. Containers: Technologies like Docker are often used to package applications and their dependencies, ensuring consistency across environments. 3. Orchestration: Tools like Kubernetes help manage containers, providing automated deployment, scaling, and operations. 4. DevOps Practices: Continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines enable rapid development and deployment cycles. 5. Dynamic Management: Resources are allocated dynamically, allowing applications to adapt to changing loads in real time. 6. APIs: Services communicate through APIs, facilitating integration and interoperability. 7. Resilience: Applications are designed to handle failures gracefully, ensuring high availability. 8. Multi-cloud and Hybrid Cloud: Cloud-native applications can run across multiple cloud environments, providing flexibility and reducing vendor lock-in. These principles allow organizations to innovate faster, respond to market demands, and optimize resource usage.
