Content and data rich companies are the oil necessary to fuel the AI machinery. But how do you monetize the opportunity? Many information services companies haven't figured this out yet. I've been fielding lots of questions on the merits of making data programmatically accessible - is there risk? - is there opportunity? If the desire is monetization (vs. operational improvement), then the proper question is: "what can API infrastructure enable, vs. how to monetize the API." API driven businesses aren't news. But unless the API and its data serve large horizontal use cases, the opportunity is limited because it enables access only to a technical audience (developers). But, figure out how to make accessible to non-technical users, and the opportunity can be massive. OpenAI is a fantastic case study on this topic, of their ~$3.4b in sales - 92% of revenue is from chatGPT subscriptions (powered by their API) - 8% comes from developers using their API directly There is more money to be made by using an API to monetize a non-technical audience.
