It’s important to experience different job roles and industries and experiment before deciding to become a specialist. Alternatively, you might remain a generalist for as long as you wish. "Facing tough challenges now helps create a better future later." “When you face tough challenges, life gets easier later. But if you always take the easy way, things might get harder later on.” In the early years, we have a lot of energy to work and tackle challenges. But as we grow older, our ability to face challenges and handle problems tends to slow down. Let's understand this with an example: After completing degrees like B.Tech, MCA, or M.Tech many students choose to work at large companies (MNCs). Do you know why? Because it feels easier. In many MNCs, you may only need to work on 3-4 tasks a year. People think, “I’ve landed my dream job, there’s no stress, and life is great.” But they don’t realize what they’re giving up. By choosing the easy path now, they might face difficulties later. Ten years down the line, they could find themselves stuck with limited career growth, even at a salary of 20-25 LPA. On the flip side, working with startups may seem more challenging at first, but it can lead to greater opportunities in the future. Startups come with uncertainties and more demanding work, but they often offer competitive salaries and, most importantly, invaluable learning experiences that help you grow faster in your career. After 10 years, if you compare both paths, you’ll see a big difference. Someone who chose the harder path in a startup may have gained more skills, grown personally, and advanced professionally. It’s not that growth doesn’t happen in MNCs, but in startups, the pace of growth is often much faster. In fact, I’ve seen people leave MNCs to join startups. Why? Because they weren’t getting what they needed in MNCs—whether it was personal growth, new challenges, or greater learning opportunities. While the path of least resistance may be joining a large, established corporation, I encourage recent graduates to strongly consider the startup route. At a startup, you'll have the rare opportunity to help build core business processes and systems from the ground up. This hands-on, cross-functional experience is simply unparalleled. You'll develop a nuanced understanding of how a company functions as a whole - a contextual knowledge that will be an invaluable asset, no matter your long-term career trajectory. In contrast, large organizations often require new hires to simply execute on pre-existing workflows. While you may gain depth in a specialized domain, your overall scope of experience will be more limited. The startup journey is not without its challenges - the pace is frenetic, the workload heavy, and the future uncertain. But navigating this crucible forges incredibly valuable skills. Adaptability, resourcefulness, and an ability to thrive in ambiguity are all qualities that will serve you exceptionally well, both now and in the years to come. So if you're a recent graduate, I strongly encourage you to seriously consider joining a startup. While it may be the road less traveled, the rewards in terms of your personal and professional development will be immense. Dare to be a pioneer, and watch your career soar. Let me share two stories that might help illuminate the journey ahead. 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝟭: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗽 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 🚀 Meet Sarah. Fresh out of college, she joins a vibrant startup. Here, her role is diverse, her impact immediate, and her learning curve steep. In the first week, she's brainstorming with the CEO, coding late into the night, and even dabbling in marketing.
