A modifiable risk factor that places you at risk of type 2 diabetes is one that can be improved, altered or changed. If you are able to successfully modify your risk of type 2 diabetes, then your health and situation will improve from what it was previously. Some biomedical risk factors such as pre-diabetes, obesity / overweight, waist circumference, high blood pressure and high levels of cholesterol or other fats in the blood (dyslipidaemia) can be modified by adopting healthier lifestyle behaviours. Also, research has shown that insulin resistance and glucose metabolism can be improved for people who suffer obstructive sleep apnoea via use of a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine at night which improves oxygenation. And there are poor and unhealthy behaviours or habits that fall into the type 2 diabetes modifiable risk factor category, for example: · Physical Inactivity / Sedentary Lifestyle; · Unhealthy Eating / Poor Nutrition; and · Smoking. It takes approximately 18-254 days to sustainably change a health behaviour i.e. more than 2 months or 66 days on average. That is why so many people struggle to prevent or effectively manage type 2 diabetes.
