𝗔 𝗵𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲, a provider of revenue and payment cycle management within the U.S. healthcare system, brought the #lab market to a 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 because labs could not connect with insurance companies. Everybody is keen on cyber security but unfortunately, as always, we will see yet another tightening of requirements. They are unlikely to help, except to lead to paralysis, when players think more about cybersecurity than their core business. We are making it harder for ourselves and not hindering hackers at all. If we look at the situation in the #LIMS market, we’ll see that it resembles that with finance. It would be worthwhile to think about backup options and understand what kind of market design would better protect all market participants. It seems critical to strike a reasonable balance between data centralization and fragmentation. If you put all your eggs in one basket and stumble, you may not be able to get them to the frying pan. At the same time, repositories that are too small don't have the resources to protect themselves. We need medium-sized ones that can defend themselves, but their data volume is not worth attacking. Ultra-large power players are just as easy (or difficult) to hack as medium-sized ones, but they are a much more attractive target. When we realize this, each market participant's chances for a quiet life will increase. #Regulating information/data via digital health is becoming a regulatory land grab. These technologies should not be excuses for agencies to gain power. Not lost on me that they are using healthcare because it is where privacy is strongest. In healthcare, we need to pump the brakes and get some of these agencies out of the business of regulating speech under the guise of protecting patients. To avoid being health hacked, treat your medical info with as much scrutiny as your other sensitive online data, e.g., watch your medical bills as you do your credit card bills, use multifactor authentication when accessing your medical records, and don't click on suspicious-looking links. Systemic reforms are needed to incentivize healthcare organizations to invest in preventive measures to improve data security without adding more complexity to an already uber-complex healthcare ecosystem!
