A soldier returns from deployment with stories no one will understand. These stories cover the range of human emotions: sadness, grief, loneliness, rage, despair, regret, and so on. When a veteran comes to #VeteransEquineAlliance (VEA) they will be gently coached to open up and tell their stories to the horse they decide to work with. Dan and I do not have to hear the conversation. This is a conversation between two beings who have been through similar - but different - experiences. Yet these two beings have everything in common. What can the horse offer? Healing, especially when the veteran returns for more sessions. We work with veterans in a way that uniquely meets their needs. What we do not do... is tell them what they need. Often a walk with their horse that involves no words is just what they need. Help us get the word out. VEA is available for all Wisconsin veterans and is free of charge. No horse experience is necessary. We are a non-riding horse program. This is so accurate 😂

Two interesting points - we have lots of vets who qualify and need support and service dogs although the DVA does not pay for a service animal there are organizations that can help. PTSD dogs are in great demand and can be a lifesaver! If a disabled vet requires a service dog the DVA will pay for veterinary care. Our military working dogs are not as lucky many are reunited and retired with their handlers but the handlers many junior enlisted take on the financial burden for a MWD who if human would be a disabled vet. Tell your congressman that these handlers who step-up and care for a retired battle buddy (K-9) - who has no doubt saved lives and been in harms way - deserve the support of the VA in caring for our retired K-9 veterans. We have made progress but let’s help the vets who are stepping up to help fellow vets (including contract dogs - working dogs on the cheap for services that didn’t program to meet needs). I know how many USAF dog teams I sent to Iraq on 7 days notice because the Army and USMC failed to plan for the dog teams required. After 9/11 the USAF supplied 80% of the teams needed by the other services and for large civilian gatherings. The Air Force K-9s had the country’s back when we were unprepared!

Having an exit plan is not a sign of weakness; it's a sign of wisdom. How many people start and retire with their first job? I imagine the answer is close to zero. In every occupation, we should have a solid exit strategy; even if that strategy is retirement, it is still an exit plan. You should also consider your exit's financial ramifications on you and your family. How much money do you need for surprises, bills for six months, etc...? Thinking this through will make or break you in a financial season.
