A few weeks ago I discussed THREE of the FOUR enablers of building a responsive, scalable and sustainable EdTech Ecosystem (Omidyar Network, 2019): EdTech Supply & Business Models; Enabling Infrastructure; and Education Strategy & Policy. Today, I share the fourth enabler: Human Capacity. Neither of the three enablers highlighted above solve challenges facing EdTech ecosystem in Africa. In fact, a variety of elements must work in sync to bring this vision to life, including: 📌 Non-government coalitions and advocacy groups to support quality EdTech scale-up. 📌 Sufficient ongoing and equitable opportunities for stakeholder capacity building. 📌 Multiple and varied ways of communicating product effectiveness, research, evaluation, and user experience. 📌 Local visionary leaders emerging to coalesce stakeholders around a bold common goal. My Contextual Interpretation: To actualise the above, all EdTech stakeholders need to speak in one voice. This is not only possible but also important in transforming education across Africa. Tomorrow, I share my recommendation on how and why the EdTech Ecosystem in Africa should speak in one voice. Stay tuned! The future of education in Africa is bright, and EdTech (educational technology) is leading the charge! Imagine classrooms filled with dynamic learning activities, where students are actively engaged and teachers have access to powerful tools to modify education. This is the vision EdTech promises. The conference highlighted how EdTech empowers teachers with digital tools to create engaging lesson plans, track student progress, and cater to diverse learning styles. One of the most exciting aspects of EdTech is its potential to level the playing field. In remote areas with limited access to quality education, EdTech solutions like online learning platforms and mobile applications can provide students with valuable educational resources. The conference emphasized the importance of creating inclusive EdTech practices that ensure equitable access to technology and foster diverse learning environments. A recurring theme throughout the conference was the power of collaboration. Governments, NGOs, tech giants, and educators all have a critical role to play in building a strong EdTech ecosystem for Africa. The conference encouraged connections and partnerships between these different stakeholders, laying a strong foundation for future collaboration and innovation. Another major takeaway was the commitment from various stakeholders to invest in EdTech infrastructure and teacher training programs. This investment is crucial for ensuring the long-term success of EdTech initiatives in Africa.
