This project snuck up on me. It emerged from some notes I had put together a few years ago, plus some research I started last fall. In part, the catalyst was the general gloom around the condition and future of the U.S. Air Force that I sensed working on a major project last summer. Because the situation is not good. It’s not defense critics like POGO calling the Air Force fighter force “geriatric“ or suggesting that it is in a “death spiral“. It’s the insiders, the in-the-loop experts. It’s people with service experience, hearing from today’s operators about the real news from bases in the U.S. and overseas, unplanned events such as F-15s being struck from active service because of aging issues, resulting in a drawdown of deployed forces. And the problem is almost entirely due to the F-35 being late. The final delivery to the USAF is due (or was due, until the latest disruptions) in 2052. The plan 22 years ago was for that to happen in 2027. Got it. Canadian Armed Forces | Forces armées canadiennes is in deep trouble. Self-inflicted wounds at highest levels of leadership. Zero political support from either major party. Recruitment failing to fill ranks and retaining qualified and capable Armed Forces members difficult with promising opportunities out of uniform. So let's stop beating a dead horse and start working on solving the problem. There are no #SilverBullet solutions and miracles won't happen overnight. However #leadership with a big L, focus on people and not stopgap measures, acting on family support and reducing the handicap long term commitments demanded of personnel will all help to fix the problems. Our allies are also struggling with the same issues and in many cases have tried the same measures which failed in the past.
