Mens Talk AU was pleased to be a part of Bunnings Melville Community Christmas Celebration last night. The local community were able to participate in a variety of Christmas Crafts, listen to Christmas songs performed by local caroleers and interact with many local groups who do wonderful work in the community including, Rotary, Neighbourhood Watch, Lions and various clubs and groups. We had many conversations around men's mental health and wellbeing especially in the lead up to the Christmas period. Now more than ever there is need for more support for men who are disconnected and lonely due to unfortunate circumstances. The community feedback was overwhelmingly supportive of Mens Talk AU work and were thankful for the support we provide. Thank you Donna Yates and Rachel Sawford for your ongoing support of Mens Talk AU collaboration with Bunnings stores throughout WA. We look forward to strengthening this relationship with new and exciting initiatives in 2025. #Bootsontheground

Today is R U OK? Day - a powerful reminder of the importance of checking in with people around you and starting conversations that could change a life. By taking the time for an R U OK? conversation and listening with an open mind, we can help those around us feel supported, connected and cared for, which can make a big difference in how they feel. Today and every day, we encourage you to pay attention to your loved ones, neighbours, and colleagues, and if you have a feeling that something isn’t right, act on it. Always remember, there is no shame in not being OK. The Extent of Isolation Among Men Older men are particularly vulnerable to social isolation. According to a 2021 report by Age UK, 1.2 million older men in the UK are living in chronic loneliness, with men over the age of 50 more likely to experience it than women. Younger men also face isolation. A YouGov survey conducted for the Jo Cox Foundation in 2019 found that 18% of men aged 30-45 said they felt lonely, compared to 14% of women in the same age group. Men are less likely to seek help for mental health issues. The Mental Health Foundation found that men in the UK are less likely than women to admit to feeling lonely or isolated, partly due to societal pressures around masculinity. Suicide rates among men are alarmingly high. In 2020, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that three-quarters of suicides in the UK are men (around 4,900 deaths). Isolation is recognized as a significant risk factor for suicide. The pandemic exacerbated isolation, especially among men. Research by the Campaign to End Loneliness showed that during the pandemic, 33% of men reported feeling lonelier than usual, while one in four men had not had a meaningful conversation in the last week by mid-2020. A study by Movember in 2020 found that 51% of men said they rarely talk about their feelings. This reluctance contributes to isolation and exacerbates mental health challenges. Loneliness and isolation were linked to physical health issues, such as heart disease, stroke, and weakened immune systems. Men’s Sheds have grown significantly in the UK, helping to address isolation among older men by providing a space for social interaction, learning, and community involvement. According to UK Men’s Sheds Association, there are over 1000 Men's Sheds across the country, with more being established each year. https://lnkd.in/e6_wc9HE #mensmentalhealth #loneliness #isolation #Menshealthmatters
