In "The Architecture of Urbanity" architect Vishaan Chakrabarti makes an unassailable case for mid-density. But not so much for how it can and must be done with the kind of equity that closes the Black-White disparities in wealth and ownership that Black leadership prioritizes. But in all fairness, making that case is not on him. The HBCU-centered mindset is the likely source of a complementary retort.

Almost three millennia ago, the poet Alcaeus presciently wrote that a city’s wealth lies “not in houses finely roofed, stone walls well built, nor canals or dockyards, but in the [people] able to use their faculties.” This remains very true and relevant today. Cities have long been the cradles of innovation, with geographical proximity, population density, and skill diversity driving knowledge flow and economic growth. Creating innovative ecosystems is complex, requiring environmental, technological, and fiscal incentives. BCG’s framework outlines common themes pursued by urban centers worldwide to nurture creativity. This article highlights exemplary cases of cities leading the way. Learn about these strategies and success stories here.

Arts & Culture have an economic and social impact on cities that is indisputable. As the DTLA Alliance’s Arts & Culture Report points out -- “The world’s most popular and thriving cities are synonymous with globally renowned cultural landmarks and experiences…” Did you know that LA County has 90,000 Creative Economy jobs across a range of industries and occupations, not just those in TV and film. Areas like New Media, Creative Goods, Advertising, and Architecture. Learn more about how the artists, institutions, destinations, and organizations supporting arts and culture in DTLA come together to make an impact across all sectors of Downtown’s economy – office, residential, retail, and hospitality. ➡ https://lnkd.in/gVMViGFF

💡 "𝐏𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐬𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐡 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲- 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝." I’m in Pittsburgh 🏙️ this week, and it’s no surprise that Lonely Planet named it a Top 10 Must-Visit City in the world. Pittsburgh’s story is one of resilience and reinvention- qualities that make it a true inspiration. 🌉 𝐀 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬: From 𝐀𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐰 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞, 𝐇𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐲 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐤, and 𝐇𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐲 𝐎𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫, who built the steel industry that powered America, to 𝐀𝐧𝐝𝐲 𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐡𝐨𝐥, who revolutionized modern art, Pittsburgh has always been home to bold thinkers. 🔥 𝐆𝐫𝐢𝐭 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Once the “Steel City,” Pittsburgh has transformed itself into a leader in 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲, 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞, and 𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, proving that resilience and creativity can redefine the future. 🏈 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤-𝐚𝐧𝐝-𝐘𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐭: The city’s pride and unity come alive every game day as Steelers fans don their black and yellow. It’s more than just sports—it’s a symbol of the community and passion that define this city. ✨ 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭 𝐏𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐬𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐡? Named one of the world’s 𝐓𝐨𝐩 𝟏𝟎 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐭-𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬, Pittsburgh is a reminder that transformation is possible for cities, organizations, and individuals. Its ability to blend history, culture, and innovation is truly inspiring. 💬 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲? Alessandro Coppola and I have been working, together with our students in the Urban Policy Design Studio at the Politecnico di Milano, on the concept of proximity and 15-minute city in the Milanese urban region for some years. I am happy to have given our contribution to this interesting book edited by Paola Pucci and Giovanni Vecchio. Our chapter is entitled: "Questioning Proximity in a Fragmented, Disorderly, and Complex Urban Region. The Limits of the 15-Min City Discourse and Frame for a More Realistic Understanding".
