The most interesting thing about today’s Scout press conference? It wasn’t about how the design team nailed the styling (they did). It wasnt that Volkswagen Group was bringing other powertrain technologies to Scout Motors Inc. to guarantee themselves a winner in North America (we need gasoline - even a light hybrid would work!) It’s that Scout will be sold directly to customers. Sorry dealers. While this may make some folks happy, I think this could be a kiss of death to this project. Let me explain. Yes, consumers hate car dealers. Do you know what they hate more? Owning a car and not having the local service support when things go wrong — and given it’s from VW and not Toyota, there will be things that go wrong. Especially with the early models. Can a new car brand overcome quality issues out of the gate? Absolutely. Though, dealers provide their best field support to customers they sold the vehicle to in the first place. Furthermore, unstable residual values of EVs adversely affect monthly lease payments already. Scout can not afford to let a strategic blunder make lease prices even worse. In the U.S. market, a quarter of new cars sold each year are leased — much less than the 60% of vehicles leased in Europe, but still a significant percentage of the market that’s aluded VW for decades. Still, will I buy one? Probably. But I plan to hold out for the V8 option.

I was excited for the announcement of the new Scout Motors Truck & SUV—until I saw the release date: 2027. It made me think of product roadmaps during QBRs. While customers want to see what’s ahead, showing features or changes too far out can be risky. It risks building expectations for things that won’t impact them in the near future. Instead, focus on the near-term value you can deliver and keep long-term changes as a "sneak peek." Prioritize what matters now and keep the excitement grounded in reality!
