At the lowest point during my job search when I wasn't getting any results, a friend pulled me into volunteering for an organization that was important to him. I was resistant, at first. That invitation led to an experience that changed my life. Here are 5 reasons to volunteer during your job search: 1. Add purpose to your day beyond the job search: When job hunting feels overwhelming, volunteering provides structure and meaning to your days. 2. Network organically: Connect with people working on a common goal in a natural setting. 3. Keep your skills sharp: Volunteering lets you apply your professional skills while learning new ones. Plus, it fills a resume gap with meaningful experience. 4. Build Compelling Interview Stories: Volunteering shows initiative, community mindedness, and character. Your volunteer experiences can answer the "what have you been doing since your last job" question with authentic stories. 5. Make the World a Better Place: At the end of the day, this matters most. While you're working toward your next career move, you're also contributing to causes that make our communities stronger. Now's the perfect time. If you don't have a job, do this. First you need to understand that what you think as a result of your situation can either help you get out of it or worsen it. Just because you don't have a job shouldn't make you to think survival. Survival mentality is self distructive. Think impact, think solution, think solving problems. You don't have a job, you have time. You dont have a job, you have brain. You don't have a job, you energy. So use your time, energy and brain to volunteer, if they need volunteers in your street to draft routine street sweeping, show up. If they need a volunteer in your church, show up, any skill, talent and ability you have, use it for volunteering. That way you are advertising your abilities and skills. You can only do this when you have solution mindset, when you are not in the survival mood. When you show up, opportunities becomes visible and you can receive recommendation based on your previous volunteered jobs Do this and thank me later let us Share some African Bitter KOLA NUT Happy New week #Ankater

The Unpaid Volunteer Dilemma: Worth the Risk or Recipe for Burnout? As professionals, we've likely encountered unpaid volunteer opportunities. Are unpaid volunteer opportunities a stepping stone to success or a slippery slope to exploitation? The Pros: GAIN valuable experience & skills. EXPAND your network & connections. ENHANCE your resume & career prospects. DEVELOP emotional intelligence & empathy. CONTRIBUTE to social impact & community growth. The Cons: FINANCIAL strain & opportunity costs. LIMITED recognition & compensation. RISK of exploitation or burnout. INEQUITABLE distribution of unpaid labor. Is unpaid volunteer work a necessary evil or a vital part of professional growth? Have you navigated unpaid volunteer work? What were your experiences? #VolunteerWork #UnpaidLabor #ProfessionalDevelopment #SocialImpact #CareerGrowth #SelfCare #FairCompensation

The canal and river trust employ around 1800 people in such a variety of roles that we have a few hundred job titles. The number of paid employees has stayed fairly constant over many years, though the roles have evolved and job titles have changed. This is particularly true in the growth in the number of volunteering leaders we have, to help manage the 4,600 volunteers who now help us; for many, the role of volunteering leader is the first step on the ladder towards a line management position. We formally started working with volunteers in 2007, when we were still British Waterways and these days roughly 1 in 5 hours of work at the Canal & River Trust is delivered by a volunteer and we would be completely lost without them. We have a plethora of volunteer roles from volunteer lock keepers to volunteer rangers and volunteer reservoir inspectors to volunteer archivists. We work as one team so much so that sometimes we struggle to recognise who is paid and who is not. In this picture, there are 12 people who carry out work for the Trust – 4 are paid and 8 are volunteers. Unless you know them already, I think you would be hard pressed to identify which is which. You can check out our vacancies for paid roles here Canal & River Trust | Careers Center | Welcome (icims.com) You can check out our volunteer opportunities here Opportunities | Canal & River Trust (canalrivertrust.org.uk) The Canal & River Trust does what it can to ensure our historic navigations can be used in the pursuit of happiness by those, both on the towpath and on the water. The Canal & River Trust has a steadily reducing financial support from the UK Government and so we therefore need your support, both from individuals and corporate partners, to keep canals open and alive. Check out our website www.canalrivertrust.org.uk for more details of how you can get involved and help. #keepcanalsalive

December 5th marks International Volunteer Day. Volunteering means dedicating time and energy to serve the community willingly, without expecting anything in return. This service can take many forms—teaching, legal aid, medical assistance, and manual labor, among others. Volunteers strive to create positive change in their communities, earning the title of Change Agents. Their work is focused on providing solutions to societal problems and helping to address community issues. In addition to serving others, volunteers gain invaluable skills and experience in their fields, whether in management, finance, human resources, medicine, or law. This dedication paves the way for building careers and fulfilling ambitions, elevating professional paths as they gain hands-on experience. Let us inspire our youth to embrace volunteering and take part in activities that can transform our communities for a brighter tomorrow. Whether through teaching, community legal support, health initiatives, manual work, or community sanitization, every effort counts in making a significant difference. #VOLUNTEERING #CHANGEAGENT #INTERNATIOALVOLUNTEERDAY

Curtin University Journalism & Public Relations graduate Holly Hazel is passionate about sharing stories and advocating for those making a real difference in the WA community. 🌍 As Volunteering WA’s Marketing & Communications Manager, Holly manages the WA Volunteer of the Year Awards, the annual International Volunteer Day Garden Party, and various state-wide marketing campaigns. This National Volunteers Week, Holly shares why she is so passionate about working for organisations that exist to make lasting change in the community. 👇 𝐐: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫? I worked for two years as the Marketing Executive at St Andrew's First Aid in Glasgow. This involved coordinating 350 volunteers across Scotland to provide first aid at community events and taught basic first aid to children and adults. As part of our advocacy campaign to introduce first aid into the school curriculum, two girls from our children's cadets program attended Scottish Parliament and showed Members of Parliament how to use a defibrillator to restart a heart. 𝐐: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞? Currently, my work focuses on amplifying the voice of WA’s volunteering sector. Sometimes people think volunteering is just a ‘nice thing to do’, but in reality people who volunteer are actually keeping this country moving and connected. There are reportedly 1.5 million people in WA who volunteer – but in reality, there are so many more. First Nations Peoples or different cultural groups may not use the word ‘volunteer’ – they’re simply using their time to help their family and the community – these are the stories I hope to help continue to share. 𝐐: 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫? Whether you want to make new friends, spend time with family, be physically active, learn a skill, boost your confidence, be creative, build your resume, or champion a cause that matters to you – there’s a volunteering experience waiting for you.
