What are the ways (white) saviorism manifests in our research and design practice, particularly in the equity design space? I recently came across a thesis by Jamie Willer (see comments for link), which analyzes how white saviorism manifests in various disciplines/industries and how people can begin developing the critical consciousness to challenge it. I especially appreciated her observation that this form of saviorism exists at three levels: mentalities (individual level), narratives (cultural level), and institutions and systems (structural level). This immediately made me think of examples I often see in the research/design industry and I'm curious what other examples folks have come across: ❎ Exceptionalism: The assumption that designers are the natural saviors to “less fortunate” communities ❎ De-politicized/de-historicized context: The refusal to acknowledge how slavery, colonization, public policy, and other harmful interventions have impacted and continue to impact communities, which has implications for the research questions we ask and the problems we wrongly try to solve for ❎ Sentimentality: Reducing the experience of communities to a single tearjerker narrative, which infantilizes participants and their motivations as well as erases grassroots attempts at solving their own problems ❎ Forced Reconciliation: Organizations invest in participatory methods like co-design without addressing the potential trauma and harm of forced inclusion into the design process (many thanks to Ipsita Chatterjea for the inspiration) #PracticalEthics #ResearchEthics #DesignJustice #TraumaInformed #UXResearch #UserResearch #QualitativeResearch #Design #UX

Highly recommended reading for every designer, strategist, and human who works with them; Queering design, being trauma informed, being radically empathetic, infusing accessibility, understanding indigeneity, and co-design overall are no longer nice-to-haves as they may have been 10 years ago. One of the reasons I'm passionate about #Inclusive #Design is its strategic potential. At its core, ID is not just about product/service design and including excluded segments, or building solutions with accessibility in mind, but also a #Futures #Studies method. There is a famous quote from William Gibson: "The future is already here – it's just not evenly distributed." In the context of ID, we can rephrase it as: "The future mismatches are already here – they're just on the extreme end of the spectrum." The basic idea behind this transformation of thinking is simple: as humanity continues to expand in breadth, depth, and complexity of its activities mismatches (and disabilities) previously considered as extreme and permanent cases become the new norm for a wider audience. And thus, solutions to such inconsistencies become widely accepted means of achieving a new state of comfort.

The Feeling Designer is a guiding force, helping us connect with the communities and places we aim to serve. It teaches us to listen, understand and build culture and community based on our unique Australian context. As Feeling Designers, we must become conduits, connectors and bridge builders. By starting to look inward and understanding our identity as Australians, whether from Melbourne, Brisbane, Ballarat, or elsewhere, we begin our collective transformation. This requires real systemic change to break down silos and integrate the disciplines of service, place and programming design. We must delve into deeper inquiries about our work's impact, seeking to create projects that truly serve the people and places of Australia. #thefeelingdesigner

I'm looking for projects to try out a new methodology. The old ways aren't working. Design streams are siloed, there is a disconnection with the end user and the outcomes of the project, functionality is favoured over expression and a unique identity. We need to design places with consideration for both functional and emotional needs. Here are 3 ways we can do that today: 1. Consider high level human factors like safety, sense of welcome and belonging in addition to functionality when designing wayfinding and spatial projects. 2. Include representation of different user groups like special interest groups, LGBTQI+ people and First Nations peoples to make them feel their identities are acknowledged and they belong. 3. Test not just functional user journeys, but also how different groups perceive their experience of safety and welcome in spaces.
