With the rise of AI tools like ChatGPT, many companies are eager to jump on the bandwagon. But should product managers pivot their focus entirely toward AI? In this Dear Melissa episode, I talked about how product leaders should approach AI as another tool in their arsenal—not a reason to overhaul their product management training. Great product management fundamentals remain key, and AI should be treated like any other technology: a tool to enhance solutions, not a catch-all. What matters is understanding your users' problems first. Only then can you decide whether AI is the right solution. And if your product has an AI component, it’s important for product managers to understand how AI models work and the ethical implications behind them. Learn it like your livelihood depends on it, because it does. It's not like any other tool. Here's about 40 minutes of video demonstrating the use of Generative AI to stand up many of the PM canvases and templates we use to facilitate conversations with real human beings. From conceptually strategic to executionally tactical. https://youtu.be/SSfZciLGmww?si=HAcjdwRvFFSvOHbR
I agree-don’t be afraid and don’t neglect product management basics to focus on AI. I have, so far, found AI to be VERY helpful in conducting competitor research, creating documents and presentations. In the near future, executives will learn to expect employees to complete certain tasks much faster. So we should all get ready by learning to use these tools.
I couldn’t agree more: "AI should be treated like any other technology: a tool to enhance solutions, not a catch-all." It’s not a hammer for every nail, but when used thoughtfully, AI can be tremendously powerful. Product managers who properly leverage it will step up their game and stay ahead in this fast-paced world.
I think there are two aspects to consider: using AI to do PM and integrating it into our products. EVERY organization should be looking into the former as it's a game-changer today. Agree with treating it as any other technology for the latter. I'm sure there are a bunch of blockchain-based features collecting dust. 😀
100%. AI is a tool that can assist your productivity, it is NOT the product manager. AI will help you complete analysis of multiple data sets more quickly, thus freeing you up to focus on managing competing priorities on the roadmap with different stakeholder groups - AI won't be able to foster buy-in from stakeholders. Use it as a tool to help you be more efficient. It can't replace you.
Thanks, Melissa- you really nailed it here: “What matters is understanding your users' problems first. Only then can you decide whether AI is the right solution. “
