Considering leaving the law but you’re afraid to? Maybe that’s because we lawyers all “mind the gap.” The resume gap. Just last week I read a LinkedIn post advising lawyers not to job hop because that exposes your unreliability or lack of commitment as a lawyer. Imagine his thoughts on the dreaded resume gap! But his post is only saying the quiet part out loud. When I “unretired” and returned to legal practice, I sent out dozens of resumes. There was no hiding the 10-year employment gap. And the vast majority of law firms and lawyers I submitted my resume to? Never heard from them again. Even when their job postings remained up for weeks and months after. My story is the reason so many are afraid to explore even a legal career pivot, let alone a career change away from law. But the moral of the story? I did restart my legal practice. Because someone saw my resume gap as an asset, not a liability. Hidden in my resume gap was the promise of a fresh perspective, a commitment to others, and a wisdom I did not possess in my twenties. And I made good on those promises when I returned to practice. Don’t let your concerns about a resume gap stop you from exploring a different career path. And lawyers, can we end the stigma around resume gaps already? #careerchange #careerpivot #womeninlaw #unretiredattorney #resumegap #legalcareers

As long as there’s a good explanation for the gap and why they want to unretire, it shouldn’t be seen as a negative. I think most of us understand that we sometimes need a break from the law.
