💡How Can We Leverage Technology Without Losing What Matters Most in Education? K-12 education is at a crossroads. Technology—especially AI—offers incredible potential, but here’s the challenge: How do we adopt innovation without losing sight of what really matters—students, teachers, and equity? One idea I’ve been reflecting on comes from the book AI and the Future of Education: Teaching in the Age of Artificial Intelligence. It highlights how AI can be a catalyst for personalized and equitable education—offering tools to meet students where they are, close learning gaps, and create truly inclusive classrooms. For me, this takeaway aligns with my belief that innovation is most impactful when it serves meaningful outcomes. As leaders in education, we want to ensure technology enhances rather than replaces what makes education personal and transformative. If you’re exploring the intersection of AI and education, this book is a thought-provoking resource. I’d love to hear your perspective: How are you leveraging technology while keeping students and educators at the center? Let’s connect and share ideas!

New Book “The Theory of Educational Technology”: "...Wegerif said: “We often forget that things we take for granted in education – like books and desks – are themselves technology that once challenged us to think differently. I find it extraordinary that so much discussion about new technology is defined by negativity and neglect. We complain that young people are glued to screens rather than talking to each other, but they are talking, through those devices. Arguably, they are moving towards a possible future where instead of just conversing with our neighbours we might understand a wider mix of people. We need to think more about how technology is changing the nature of dialogue and what it means to be; and what that means for how we learn.” Entangled History: The book discusses the intertwined history of education and technology, emphasizing that they have always been connected and should be considered together at a theoretical level. AI in Education: It addresses the debate around AI’s role in education, recognizing its potential to transform learning while also acknowledging concerns about misinformation and reduced learning opportunities. Future of Learning: The authors envision a future where education occurs through global online communities of inquiry, supported by AI ‘partners’, fostering collective identities and understanding among students. Educational Design: The book advocates for an ‘educational design-based research’ approach, where educators, communities, and academics collaboratively design and refine the integration of technology in education. The book raises critical questions about how technology can shape the nature of dialogue and learning, and how educators can effectively harness technological advancements to meet global challenges. https://lnkd.in/gQ4vaxVU

🤖 What happens if there aren’t enough jobs to go around because of automation and AI advancements? 🏫 Forbes’ Cathy Rubin posed that question to me, Howard Gardner, Nick Bostrom, Andy Hargreaves, and Charles Fadel with an eye toward what it means for education systems. 👻 I emphasized a couple exciting use cases for AI technology, which is often cast as a boogeyman in education contexts: 1️⃣ Supporting teachers to improve their teaching and save time—from helping them lesson plan to creating more personalized learning opportunities to helping them assess student work 2️⃣ Serving as a tutor when there’s not another option.Though not as good as a 1:1 human tutor, it’s more affordable, accessible, scalable, and certainly better than the alternative when there is no tutoring at all. 🤔 Check out the article below and let us know how you’re thinking about how education should change in the age of AI in the comments!
