Navigating early morning wakeups with your little one? It's easy to fall into these common pitfalls. Here are the missteps I made and what you can do instead: Delaying Bedtime: Pushing bedtime later might seem like a quick fix, but it often backfires. Reducing Daytime Sleep: Trimming naps might seem logical, but it can lead to overtiredness and earlier wakeups. Early risings, like around 5 am, are often a sign of overtiredness. Adjusting bedtime or nap schedules the wrong way can worsen the situation or even trigger nighttime disturbances. What to Do Instead: Understand Sleep Needs: How much daytime sleep is appropriate for your child's age? What's the maximum awake time your little one can handle without becoming overtired? If you're uncertain about your child's sleep needs, I've got an online baby and child sleep masterclass on the 13th May to help you out. Just DM or comment 'sleep' to get the link. ✨ From Chaos to Calm: A Sleep Story for the Exhausted Parent's✨ “When we reached out to Donna, we were in survival mode. Our 5-month-old would only contact nap, co-sleep, and wake every 2 hours. We were utterly exhausted as a family and didn’t know where to start. Even naps were a struggle, lasting only 30–45 minutes. Donna saved us.” This beautiful family’s journey is one many of us can relate to—tired, overwhelmed, and unsure how to break the cycle. Together, we worked gently and patiently to create a sleep plan tailored to their little one’s needs. Fast forward to today: their baby now naps in her own room, sleeps soundly in her cot, and wakes only once or twice for a feed (as per their goals). And those dreaded 30-minute catnaps? They’re now full, restorative naps every single day. What made all the difference? A slow, child-focused approach that didn’t just help their baby sleep but also reassured and empowered Mum & Dad. This isn’t just about “fixing sleep”—it’s about supporting families, one gentle step at a time. If you’re feeling stuck in the thick of it, you don’t have to do this alone. Let’s turn your sleepless nights into peaceful ones. 🌙 Reach out today, and let’s create your family’s sleep transformation story. #Bub2Sleep #GentleParenting #SleepSupport #ExhaustedMums #TailoredSleepSolutions #BabySleep #theparentingcollective ##selfcareformums #HappyMamaHappyFamily #consciousparenting #perthmumsandbubs #perthmums #perthdads #parentingsupport #parentingsupport #parentingtips #breathedeep #mumlife #aussiemumbloggers #motherlove #motherlife #mother

Sleep or homeostatic pressure, is one of the key factors in why adults and babies have trouble getting and staying asleep. For example, if you go to bed too early and aren't tired enough, then you are likely going to by lay there wide awake, wondering why you can't shut down and sleep. This is exactly the same for babies and children! If we are putting then down for a nap or bedtime too early and there is a lack of this pressure, then you will 100% see battles and tears. Now, don't get me wrong these episodes can be down to other causes, but often is the case that they just aren't ready to go to sleep. However, this does not mean that keeping your baby up super late, to ensure they have this pressure built up is the answer. It's about finding where their sweet spot is, which is where I come in! This sleep pressure can not only be improved through age appropriate awake times or windows, but also by what is going on during these awake times during the day. We are aiming for these awake times to fill that pressure tank up, through play or even getting outside in the fresh air. I know myself if I have been a lazy toad and not moved much that I struggle to sleep at night, but if I have been running all over the place and maybe even dragged myself to the gym, then BOOM.... a better nights sleep. By filling the sleep tank up enough, we will reduce bedtime battles and also ensure our little ones sleep for longer. If you would like to know more then get in touch. ✨Ever feel like the way you settle your little one to sleep at night is the reason they keep waking up? ✨ You’re not alone! Most of the parents I meet worry that the way they settle their little one to sleep is the number one cause of their frequent night wakes. 💤 💡Here's the great news: It's not about how you put them to sleep and....👇 🤦Spoiler alert! 🤦 Waking up through the night is very normal for babies, toddlers and adults. Improving their sleep at night does not need to be focussed upon changing how you settle them or them needing to settle alone or 'self soothe' as it's labelled in our modern, behavioural focussed society! How you settle them might be the thing that works best to help them settle back to sleep in the night but I bet it is not the main factor if they're waking frequently! 💤Want to see what the other factors could be?💤 📞 Let's chat in one of my free calls and secure your truly gentle sleep support before Christmas! 🎄 😯 Only 4 support slots left before Christmas! 😯 #SleepTruths #BeyondBedtime #NightWakingFacts #BabySleepMyths #LetGoOfTheGuilt #BedtimeReassurance #SettlingMyths #ParentingRealityCheck #SleepRoutineTruth #BeyondTheRoutine #NightWakeFacts #ParentingUnfiltered #SleepWithoutStress #RestEasyParents

Sharing recent feedback from a mom of an 11 month old I supported in April who were struggling with lots of night wakes but the biggest priority was split nights, which we stopped within the first week. ❤️ Claire O'Reilly: My baby was a woeful sleeper but we have seen such improvement under Patrice’s guidance. She helped us to fix the split nights we frequently had. He hasn’t woken for more than a few minutes in well over a month. Patrice never pushed us to move at a pace faster than we were ready to go. We’ve gone from 1 and 2 hour stretches to getting 3 and 4 hour stretches. Patrice helped us to gain a better understanding of our son’s sleep needs, sleep pressure and the balance of daytime and night time sleep. Even though we have finished our 3 weeks of support, I still refer frequently to information Patrice gave us. She has given us the road map for how to continue making changes to help our son sleep better. As a result we are able to make small changes that bring improvement but it’s so gradual to at baby has never been upset. I can confidently say Patrice never stopped me from responding to my child in the way I wanted to. Baby has been nurtured and loved throughout the process and as a result sleep has improved but I have zero guilt. I feel empowered by Patrice and know that I have the knowledge to keep making adjustments that work for our family without negatively impacting my baby. Is sleep hard? What do you KNOW about your baby that guides your bedtime and nighttime support? So often we get caught up in what OTHERS say we should do to get longer stretches, shorten bedtime, or wean off of support towards more independent sleep. And when we get caught up in that, we forget that we know our babies better than anyone else. We bury the voice that tells us we can be in tune with our baby’s needs. We let self-doubt rise up until we view responding to our baby’s need for support as a “bad habit”, as creating a “negative sleep association”, or as not taking responsibility for “teaching” our baby to sleep. Instead, look at what works well for you and your baby at bedtime or nighttime. Instead of feeling guilty about supporting sleep, embrace what you KNOW about your baby and what makes sleep happen more smoothly. Do what works because you KNOW your baby well. Pay attention to the ways your support helps your baby. Pay attention to what negative self-talk goes through your head so you can change it to something that helps YOU help your baby sleep better. You know your baby. You can trust your baby is expressing their needs. And you can trust yourself to meet those needs without reservation. You are doing an amazing job. #babydevelopment #babysleep #holisticsleep #occupationaltherapist #parenting #parentingstyles #unconditionallove #braindevelopment #neurodevelopment #parentingsupport #infantdevelopment
