My 5 year 'Googleversary' today! I've loved every minute.  5 things I am *deeply* grateful for: 1. The rare opportunity to be in the engine room of this rocket ship as it grew from $9B+ run rate business to $45B+ in only 5 years.  There is no playbook for growth at this scale; we get to write it as we go. 2. The joy of watching thousands of customers thrive on Google Cloud. It is impressive and humbling to see so many IT leaders and their teams transform their organizations including through the pandemic.     3. The privilege of working closely with some of the most innovative and humble leaders and colleagues who are true pioneers in cloud infrastructure (Googlers and our partners). 4. The honor of working with some of the most respected industry analysts and earning their endorsement.  The work they do has never been more important with today's pace of change. 5. The good fortune of working at a storied workplace that competes vigorously but never compromises on its values - Respect the user, Respect the opportunity, and Respect each other.

Today marks my last day at Amazon Web Services (AWS) and what a 20 months it’s been! It's crazy how much you achieve, the people you meet, and the fun along the way. I would like to thank my amazing team, my colleagues, but most importantly, all my customers. Without any of you, my journey would not have been possible. Eight years ago, when I was tasked to get certified on Amazon Web Services (AWS), I was afraid of wasting a $150 exam fee and procrastinated for eight months. When I finally started, it only took me less than two weeks to pass the first certification. Confront what scares you! If people encounter one toxic person in the organization, they will perceive the entire organization as toxic. One of my friends got her dream job at a big tech company. Their excitement diminished shortly after starting the new job. It was hard to schedule a one-on-one with her manager, who had never turned on their video. Although she was confused, let down, and lost, she still did a great job and helped other colleagues in their spare time. One day, she was laid off along with 9,000 others. She had the opportunity to look inside but had never bothered to do so. She just waited until the last day and started another job. What should you do if your manager never turned on the video with you in a one-on-one meeting? Do you expect your manager to turn on the video? Do you consider it a toxic behavior? For the last few months we have been working with Christian Newman to develop an application in App Sheet. The project was really exciting - an app for inspectors to report on care homes conditions. We are happy that we could accompany Christian on this journey and that he could share this development with the world. This tool will make the work of thousands of people easier. Great job by Google. Taking full accountability. Explaining what happened, why it happened and why it won’t happen again. They also didn’t rush an explanation until they had all the details. Also clears up a lot of FUD that was put out Into the blogosphere regarding impact. I’ve been an engineer long enough to know that eventually things will go wrong and you will be the one at fault. Don’t make excuses. No one cares about them anyways. They just want to make sure it never happens again. This is the way you handle mistakes. Other Providers should take note.

That's what it looks like when our Intranet congratulates someone to his or her "Googleversary". Today, 4 years ago, it was my first day as a Googler/Noogler ("New Googler")/Boogler ("Berlin Googler")/soon-to-be-Greygler ("Googler over 40"). 𝘚𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘛𝘦𝘤𝘩 𝘚𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘴 - 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘱 𝘰𝘯 𝘤𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘥 𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 𝘰𝘳 𝘰𝘯 𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨. 𝘈𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘤 - 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥𝘯'𝘵 𝘮𝘦𝘦𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘨𝘭𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘯-𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘵 4-5 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘴. For someone who thrives in settings in which I can collaborate in-person with "my" teams, customers or partners in order to analyze and solve complex business challenges, this became a real challenge for me and very quickly I started to doubt my career choices. 𝟰 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻, 𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗴𝗹𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻'𝘁 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝘂𝗯𝘁. I got to meet amazing people, make new friends (yes, at work!!), had the privilege of collaborating with a fantastic customer and partner, experience very difficult and very joyous moments, had to go through moments of severe defeat and was ultimately allowed to have great successes as part of a global team of hard-working, brilliant Googlers. So - thank you all for being a part of this wild ride - you all know who you are. Let's see what the future holds and let's shape it together to make it better.
