We asked Dr. Stacey Jones why she chose the path of a start-up practice, what impact independent practice ownership has had on her, and what encouragement she'd give to colleagues considering opening their own practice. It’s an honour to be on the pro bono recognition list, but so what? It’s a privilege and a pleasure to be able to help people, whether on some of our biggest projects, or helping out in the surgeries that #nrfprobono supports - but it also makes one a better lawyer. While some issues may be mundane, many are unusual and challenging legal issues. In one case, Covid disruption to hearings meant that the court had failed to deal with a capacity issue, and the litigation ran on. The family member helping the claimant had the sense not to act as litigation friend, as they could not bear the costs risk - but risking other problems. Many litigants have no experience of court processes, leaving them mystified and aggrieved. The situations are personal, and stressful. If one can give clear, pragmatic advice then, one can do it for anyone. It may be there is no remedy, or that the costs and risks are not worthwhile - always tough advice. Finally, while one sometimes sees disputes early, often they have been going for years and are at or close to the last minute. Rescuing these cases tests and grows one’s legal and tactical knowledge and ingenuity. This is a real benefit, not only to worthy causes, but all lawyers, firms and the commercial clients they also support. #probono

Sorry to miss this event Howard Chao. But the topic was very much on my mind half a world away. Change is coming to legal services as did to financial services fifteen years ago. Entrepreneurs like Lisa Gradow and the team Fides are re-inventing the experience of solving legal problems. For more on this topic and the parallels to the peak #fintech period, see https://lnkd.in/gfW86tsx

Change begins with each of us and needs all of us. I've been working with leading colleagues in the field to better understand how we can transform the healthcare system into one that is more equitable for everyone and identify what type of leadership that will take. JUSTICE SQUARED – or Just Leaders for a Just Health System – is a new leadership program from @Well-being and Equity (WE) in the World, with support from @RWJF. In teaming healthcare leaders with community leaders, the program will draw from the perspectives of people who understand how the system works as well as people who have experienced inequity in healthcare firsthand. Together, they can clearly identify the root causes of inequities and develop effective solutions. JUSTICE SQUARED will center shared leadership and accountability, recognizing that no single leader, organization, or community can dismantle structural racism alone. Through a two-year journey, JUSTICE SQUARED will provide tools as well as technical and peer support to make change easier. To learn more, check out the video below and/or visit: https://lnkd.in/gxp2fn7U. Please also share the opportunity with your networks. Applications for Phase I are due on January 15, 2025. https://lnkd.in/gUG6w-Ax

One of the things that people don't really talk about when it comes to B Corp certification is just how hard it is to get. It's really pretty difficult. I've been working with a manufacturer on obtaining the accreditation recently and it's been a colossal effort between engineering, HR, operations, the C-suite and shareholders to move through the process. What I assumed would be a bit of a rubber-stamp job for a small fee rapidly turned into a top-to-bottom review of the group's policies, processes, hiring and procurement practices, changes to company constitutions, and a whole lot more besides. I expect the process will take around a year to complete. Firms who get certified have really committed as B Corp really make you take a long hard look at yourself. Having that logo on your website, promotional materials and packaging is no mean feat and the firms that have it are better managed and governed as a result of going through the process. So congrats to Ignition Law, Alex McPherson and the rest of the team for doing the hard yards and getting it done, and for leading the way on how law firms should be managed. With all the talk in the industry about work-life balance, burnout, junior lawyers not aspiring to be partners any more, AI disruption and so on, better governance in law firms may just be part of the answer. If you want to talk about certification and how to go about it, do get in touch.
🌟 Exciting News! We are delighted to share that our founder, Alex McPherson, has been featured in a recent article by The Law Society Gazette, discussing the growing importance of B Corp Certification in the legal sector. Alex's expertise and leadership played a fundamental part in Ignition’s journey to B Corp Certification and the business remains steadfast in our commitment to accountability, transparency and positive impact. Join us in celebrating our journey towards creating meaningful change, both within our organisation and the wider community!
