Internship today has taken a new face, most especially in the remote space. Students can now successfully complete their internships programme from the comfort of their home unlike before. Taking it back to 10-12 years ago students on internship are often use to run errand in some offices either government or private sector, limiting the level of knowledge and training they are require to get and when they refuse to run errands supervisors sometimes would not agree to sign their log book. The culture of unpaid internships needs to end. Why should you NOT go for an unpaid internship? a.) They will say it is a "learning opportunity": In the world of "organized" information, you can find numerous guides, tutorials, and gurus who provide road maps to up-skill yourself in a particular domain. You don't have to be exploited by companies who are not humane enough to pay you any compensation at all (neither in form of equity nor money) for doing their heavy lifting. b.) You will not own the product: If you are that okay with working for free, work for yourself. Develop cool applications and tools; that only "you" will own. Showcase that on your portfolio and build your own brand.

It baffles me to see such intense competition for an internship in top tier companies🫥 I mean, I get the hype But it’s not worth so much that you deteriorate your mental health These internships only help you realise the company culture – which ultimately helps you understand if you truly even want to be a part of those companies Here’s the harsh truth: Internships in top companies are usually more limited - you learn very specific tasks Moreover, they do not trust interns with their confidential work, so you miss out on the cool and cream areas of work anyway Getting an internship in a startup on the other hand leaves you with very few learnings again Your main goal as a new age startup intern usually is to perform marketing and sales tasks So according to me, it’s best if you intern in medium sized companies/firms If you’re interested in Consulting/Finance, look for Boutique firms which are performing really well but are not well known It’s the companies which you haven’t heard of, where you learn the most🎓
