Diabetes Alert Day is an important reminder for individuals to assess their risk for diabetes and take proactive steps to prevent and manage the disease. For plan sponsors, it's also an opportunity to evaluate whether their pharmacy benefit is optimized to lower costs associated with diabetes. Our Diabetes Care Plus Program has proven to be a cost-effective solution for our clients. By capturing financial assistance from diabetes drug manufacturers, we may reduce out-of-pocket costs for both members and plans. The program offers the most prescribed generic preventive medications for diabetes and its related complications as well as select diabetes-related supplies at a reduced or waived cost. In addition to cost savings, the Diabetes Care Plus Program focuses on improving patient outcomes. Through targeted outreach, we encourage non-adherent members to take their diabetic medication(s) as prescribed. This approach reduces healthcare costs by decreasing hospitalizations, emergency room visits, physician office visits, and the use of adjunctive medications. The results speak for themselves. In 2023, one of our clients saved $17.22 PMPM by implementing the Diabetes Care Plus Program. The number of people living with type 2 diabetes in Australia has tripled in the last 30 years & we know there are at least 2 million Aussies living with prediabetes (many who have no idea the path they're on). Once a condition we thought could only be 'managed' with medication and would ultimately lead to death, we now know those living with the condition can put it into remission but more importantly, we know that type 2 diabetes can be prevented entirely! There's an Australian Parliamentary Iniquiry into Diabetes underway to gain and understanding of how to reduce diabetes impact on people & the healthcare system. There's no reason why we can't replicate these results from the NHS Healthier You Diabetes Prevention Program (where completion by those with prediabetes was linked to a 42% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes) here in Australia and reduce the burden of the type 2 epidemic on our healthcare system. #type2diabetes #prediabetes
