#RWTHalumni foster #EntrepreneurialTransfer through innovation, start-ups, and industry cooperation | RWTH Aachen University has a huge network of alumni from all over the world. Whether they used to study, research, teach or work in tech or administration, for many of them, their studies or work at RWTH has not only shaped the direction of their professional careers, but also forged a strong bond with their alma mater – lasting well beyond their time in Aachen. Or, as Dr. Annika Hauptvogel put it, "My time at RWTH never really came to an end." Dr. Annika Hauptvogel is a great example of how RWTH alumni drive entrepreneurial transfer from research to industry and society. Upon completing her PhD at Werkzeugmaschinenlabor WZL der RWTH Aachen, Annika joined Siemens. As Head of Technology & Innovation Management, the RWTH alumna aims to get new technologies off the ground and facilitate their transfer from research to market through innovation ecosystems like the Siemens Research and Innovation Ecosystem Aachen Arc. In addition to RWTH alumni supporting entrepreneurial transfer through research-industry cooperation, there is, of course, the innovators themselves. Dr. Kai-Philipp Kairies, founder and CEO of ACCURE Battery Intelligence, and David Oudsandji, founder and CEO of Voltfang, are two of them. Both studied at RWTH and subsequently founded their own start-ups with a focus on #batteries. Along their individual entrepreneurial journeys in the #Aachen start-up ecosystem, the two #RWTH alumni joined forces with further local #battery start-ups to form the #BatteryCircleAachen. What potential does the "Heilbronn ecosystem" offer start-ups, SMEs and corporations? An interesting question, as there are very different answers depending on the perspective. The last two days, the HTGF | High-Tech Gründerfonds investor meeting was guest in Heilbronn. At the panel during the Tuesday session hosted by Alex von Frankenberg together with Markus Merz (Stimme Mediengruppe) Arno Huhn (Schwarz Gruppe) and Oliver Hanisch (Campus Founders), we discussed the opportunities and challenges of the Heilbronn ecosystem. We quickly agreed that #Heilbronn is developing rapidly and offers an ecosystem for innovation and transformation that is probably unique in Germany. From the perspective of a medium-sized company and global player like IDS Imaging Development Systems GmbH, there are several aspects that play a particularly important role here: ✔ the creation of synergies through the networking of business and research, ✔ the close exchange on transformation topics with other companies and ✔ the strengthening of the region as a business location and an attractive place to work. We not only want to actively shape the Heilbronn ecosystem, but also support promising young companies throughout Germany. Our investment in the HTGF is one of the building blocks in our ecosystems strategy. Thanks to the whole HTGF team for organizing this event and to Claudia Duckstein and Julian Marx from Schwarz Corporate Solutions and Patrick Burkert and Olli from Campus Founders for hosting us.

We have the blueprints of success – but we must go further. Unlocking regional capital and devolving decision-making on innovation spending will be the next stage in developing the wider UK innovation economy and likely a key focus for the next Government....
Important article by Kath Mackay, highlighting the need to support life science companies outside the Golden Triangle. Birmingham Health Innovation Campus and PHTA are set to play a crucial role here - providing lab space to not only regional spin-outs, but creating space for innovators nationwide to expand and grow. Is Denmark closer to getting our own ‘Kendall Square’? Yes! Denmark has a lot to offer within the quantum and life science sectors. We have plenty of great educational institutions, hospitals, and research centers, many of which are clustered here at Nørrebro, Copenhagen where BioInnovation Institute is also located. However, to become one of the top innovation hubs in the world - which is indeed possible - we must still foster an environment that can facilitate dynamic collaborations between the important players. Now we might be one step closer. Today, Københavns Kommune, University of Copenhagen (Københavns Universitet) and the Danish Government launched a new collaboration with the aim to create a new ‘Innovation District Copenhagen’ for life science and quantum technologies. I had the pleasure of showing the delegation around the potential new ‘Innovation District Copenhagen as well as the facilities of BioInnovation Institute together with David Dreyer Lassen from Copenhagen University. It was also my pleasure to showcase two of our startups – Ampa Medical and QunaSys – two good examples of how we can innovate good research and ideas that will benefit all of us in the future. Danish companies and research from the universities within life science and quantum technology have the skills to devise and deliver solutions to several of the world’s challenges, and at BII we and our startups are already well underway. Since 2018, BII has supported over 100 startups which together have raised 4.2 billion Danish kroner, created more than 600 jobs and attracted international talent and investments to Denmark. But if life science is to be a position of strength that Denmark can live off of in the future, it requires even more collaborations across universities, educational institutions, hospitals, and industry. I am enthusiastic about the commitment of Copenhagen Municipality, University of Copenhagen and the Danish Government to work together on further strengthening the life science and quantum ecosystem located here at the heart of Copenhagen. With our joint efforts, Innovation District Copenhagen can indeed become the European equivalent of Kendall Square. I can't wait to get started with fulfilling the great ambitions outlined today. New research of Buck Consultants International shows that campuses in the Netherlands play a crucial role as drivers of economic growth and innovation. They create thousands of jobs, support startups and strengthen cooperation between science and business. We are proud to be part of this growing ecosystem. Our triple helix ecosystem—a collaborative synergy between government, knowledge institutions, and industry—that has allowed us to host and guide numerous former Eindhoven University of Technology student teams as they transitioned into successful start-ups. The presence of educational institutions like Summa Automotive & Smart Mobility and Fontys Automotive makes us unique and further enriches this ecosystem, serving as training grounds for future talent who may one day join our campus community. The arrival of several multinationals, along with the growth of numerous campus organizations, reflects the remarkable progress we’ve made over the past seven years. With Steenoven Catering as a trusted partner and VB+ Vastgoed Groep joining as our new facility management organization, we’ve taken a significant step toward professionalization—a process we are committed to advancing in the years ahead. Together, we are contributing to a future full of sustainable innovations and economic impact! All in good grace I got through my final seminar on my PhD journey yesterday! Having got far from enough sleep and being engaged in too much work during the last weeks including travels to the Netherlands, Germany and Sweden, presenting at the CINet conference in Hamburg on the 17th and at the Community of Incubators in Western Sweden meeting on the 18th, I got to Karlstad for my final PhD seminar on Monday. I am grateful to Prof. Lise Aaboen, NTNU for taking on the assignment of opponent and delivering so many important and valuable comments on my work! A journey that started in early 2021, paved by so many fun moments as well as so much work, the final seminar is the last seminar before defending my thesis. I am starting to see the end of this process, although there is still a lot of work to do. My thesis is about venture builders (aka venture studios, company builders, start-up studios), which is a topic of growing interest in academia. Venture builders can be seen as organizations creating new organizations as their business idea. It cannot be considered a win to having had the final seminar on a PhD journey, but it is still a milestone that gives me hope of being able to reach the next. 💡 I am grateful to all my advisors, co-authors, and colleagues making this journey a collaborative and fun experience alongside the endless hours I spend alone reading and writing in my office. Celebrating small achievements is what's takes me to the next step. 👇 How do you celebrate milestones at work? #venturebuilders #venturestudios #startupstudios #research #phdstudies _____________________ Did you like this post? 3 years before and 3 years following today The European election has just taken place, and already the next election takes place: the EMVA Board of Directors will be elected the day after tomorrow at the general assembly in Gdansk, Poland. Dr. Christoph Garbe, the member of the Board of Directors since 2021, summarizes the achievements during his tenure: "I am committed to new technologies and young companies to bring forward our industry in different verticals. The EMVA now gives startups better opportunities to present themselves to a wider audience of established companies. At the Business Conference this year, for example, there is a dedicated slot for startups to present themselves. The EMVA convention booth, such as at the #Logimat, has also been opened to members, so that young member companies can also exhibit to an international audience at a low cost. Overall, the focus is now more on startups and young companies. However, the progress is not yet sufficient. I will continue to work on bringing startups together with established companies and offering them a platform in the EMVA. It is also important that new technologies are not only presented through research (as part of the European Machine Vision Forum), but explicitly with startup slots, etc.” He has applied to be elected for a second term at the EMVA general assembly. Don't miss news about the choice that will impact the European image processing industry. We are waiting for the results. And You? Over the past few months, we have been closely monitoring, reflecting, and discussing the changing landscape of academia and the world of university spin-offs. These thoughts have taken us to the crossroads of basic research and its translation into tangible innovation, the potential of the European research landscape, and how we can increase its societal and economic impact, and led us to ask how academic institutions can better serve the communities around them. Starting this October, we will share our thoughts more openly in a series of posts designed to spark rich discussions. We want to create short, thought-provoking insights and raise questions that challenge our current perceptions of the role of academia in enabling desired futures. We invite you to join these conversations, share your views, and help us explore these fascinating topics further. Your experiences and insights can be invaluable as we tackle these complex issues together. That being said, let’s turn to our first impetus. The agility and rapid innovation typical of startups could revolutionize academia, transforming universities into dynamic hubs of societal impact. By adopting startup dynamism, could universities not only accelerate their research outputs but also enhance their practical applications, thus truly enabling desired futures? What transformations would this agility bring to traditional academic settings?
