#Marketing doesn't always need to be complex; the key is a solid product. #CharliXCX's approach with her "#BRAT" album is a perfect example of letting a strong product speak for itself in the market. Case in point: neon green has become synonymous with the album—a true testament to effective marketing. https://lnkd.in/ez9xjdTM

Thompson Twins on the office jukebox today with lessons in #Marketing and #BrandDistinctiveness. Marketing is about creating distinction and capturing an audience - either by standing out in a crowded marketplace or creating an entirely new marketplace. In the case of the 1980s Thompson Twins, their brand was a little misleading and confusing and that’s why it worked. They bucked the trends of their time. The Thompson Twins were neither twins nor a duo during their peak years. They were a trio. What’s more, they got rid of all the typical members of an 80s band including dropping the multiple guitarist and lead drummer model. They carved out a lane of instrumentation with worldly emotional melodies, percussions, xylophone and chord changes and rhythms that took you on a hypnotic journey. Unlike many conventional pop bands and artists, they never had a formula for what they did, which made their subsequent albums and success hard to replicate in their later years. “Hold Me Now” became the Thompson Twins’ biggest hit in America, but at the same time, it pressured the band to produce top-selling music even when they were not completely comfortable with that. This ultimately began their subsequent disbanding and reformations. They had one of those careers where they were really big for only 3 or 4 years, but they packed a lot in those years. In 2005, this song ranked on Blender’s list of “The 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were born.” Why are they a lesson in marketing? Because even though they only had major success for 3 or 4 years, GenXers have never forgotten them. They truly were distinct…and good! 🎶
