**🚀 The Evolution of Pharmacy: From Dispensing Medications to Clinical Care!** Pharmacy is transforming, and today’s pharmacists are stepping beyond traditional roles to become key players in patient care. Modern pharmacists don’t just fill prescriptions—they work alongside doctors and nurses to improve outcomes. 🌟 Here’s why this shift is essential: ### **1️⃣ Medication Therapy Management (MTM)** Pharmacists help patients understand and manage complex treatments, optimizing medication for safety and effectiveness. **MTM improves adherence, reduces side effects, and prevents unnecessary hospital visits.** ### **2️⃣ Chronic Disease Support** In conditions like diabetes and hypertension, pharmacists provide **ongoing support and education**, helping patients manage their illness with lifestyle advice and medication adjustments. ### **3️⃣ Patient Counseling** Accessible and knowledgeable, pharmacists offer **personalized counseling** to enhance patient confidence, improve adherence, and ensure patients understand their medications. ### **4️⃣ Preventing Medication Errors** By double-checking prescriptions and identifying potential interactions, **pharmacists protect patients** from harmful drug combinations and adverse reactions. --- ### **The Future of Pharmacy** As healthcare moves toward collaboration, pharmacists are expanding their roles in hospitals, primary care, and telemedicine. Let’s support this evolution and recognize pharmacists as essential healthcare providers! 🌐 #ClinicalPharmacy #PharmacistFuture #PatientCare #HealthcareInnovation

The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) Model State Pharmacy Act defines standard of care as “the degree of care a prudent and reasonable licensee or registrant with similar education, training, and experience will exercise under similar circumstances.” The National Institute of Health defines it as “treatment that is accepted by medical experts as a proper treatment for a certain type of disease and that is widely used by healthcare professionals,” noting that the term is also called “best practice” or “standard medical care.” #standardofcare #pharmacist

Should pharmacists be the first stop for primary care? --- The Canadian Pharmacists Association hosted its first summit on the future of #PrimaryCare last Thursday. They released a statement (in the comments) summarizing their vision: "Together, our vision is a system where pharmacy is recognized as a first stop in the primary care journey for all peoples in Canada." --- This is a bold vision for pharmacy. I'm not sure I agree with pharmacies ALWAYS being the first stop for primary care, but there is some evidence out there to support it: -Most patients have a #pharmacy nearby that is more accessible than a primary care physician -There's an underutilization of pharmacist expertise in the community setting (and debatably other settings too) -A significant amount of primary care involves routine maintenance of medications and vaccines, where pharmacists are the experts -Pharmacists often produce better outcomes while being cheaper in multiple chronic conditions (hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, etc.). -Pharmacists can handle minor illnesses and point-of-care testing at the same quality (but cheaper) than emergency departments, urgent care, or even primary care physicians. --- In contrast to always being the first stop, I would prefer to think of pharmacies as an extension or supplement to primary care, allowing patients a ~monthly maintenance touchpoint instead of the 0-4 times per year that patients typically receive primary care. In my (current) opinion, let the diagnosticians like physicians and nurse practitioners handle the particularly complex patients or illnesses, but #pharmacists could handle the minor stuff and escalate when necessary. However, millions of patients (6.5 million in the case of Canada) don't have access to a physician or NP at all. The pharmacist may be the only option for those patients. Does that make pharmacists the first stop for primary care? Or a supplement? Thanks Paulius Mui, MD for bringing this to my attention.

Having had the privilege to work alongside exceptional pharmacists at both Medco (AD Sonny Borja, PharmD, MBA, PAHM Becky Nagle, PharmD, BCPS Amy Steinkellner, PharmD Darlene Mednick and many others) and RxAlly (Bruce Roberts Bruce A. Semingson Lucille Accetta, RPh, MPH, MBA (also at Medco!) Michael Taday PharmD, MBA Rajeev Verma Shannon Burke Mike Groh) I've witnessed firsthand the invaluable role they play in patient care. It's a theme in this enlightening article by Lauren Massaro. Three key points from the article: · It emphasizes the extensive training and expertise pharmacists bring to the table across various specialties. · It's not about hierarchy, but collaboration, as pharmacists' contributions go beyond medication knowledge to improve patient outcomes. · The COVID-19 pandemic showcased their resilience and capability in providing essential healthcare services. Let's continue to advocate for expanded scope and collaboration between physicians and pharmacists for a more efficient and effective healthcare system. Check out this insightful article and join the conversation! #Healthcare #Pharmacists #Collaboration #Medco #RxAlly
In its ongoing #campaign against “scope creep,” the American Medical Association argued that pharmacists don’t receive enough training. #Physicians and #pharmacists alike disagree. https://lnkd.in/erdEEg6Z
