mebl | Transforming Furniture’s Post

Founded in 2009, the RÆBURN fashion brand is on a mission to transform surplus materials, products and artifacts into entirely new designs. Fascinated with de-commissioned military stock, such as parachutes,  founder Christopher Raeburn started repurposing these materials into outerwear for both men and women. Ten years later, LAYER Design Studio reached out to RÆBURN to extend its use of upcycled parachute material  into furniture. "Canopy furniture collection has a collaborative nature," says Benjamin Hubert, Layer’s founder, "and shares our passion for responsible design." The collection comprises four rocking chairs and two screens made of welded steel frames with upcycled parachute upholstery. The designers focused on using surplus military parachutes and aircraft brake parachutes made from ultra-thin ripstop nylon material. Materials are a big contributor to climate change, as their extraction and production contribute directly or indirectly to energy use and CO2 emissions. In our linear economic system, we discard materials, filling landfills and oceans with garbage instead of circulating and using them as new resources for different purposes. LAYER designed the collection, taking inspiration from the iconic RAEBURN fashion range, and worked with British furniture brand Allermuir to prototype and manufacture the frames. In the meantime, RAEBURN's team crafted the textile elements. The fabric has been wrapped, slung and dangled within the framework to create padding, webbing and cover solutions with straightforward fixation points. The Canopy Collection is a great case study showing how different industries – fashion and furniture – can collaborate to test, learn and create sustainable products while diverting waste  and reducing the extraction of raw materials. #mebltransformingfurniture #sustainablefurniture #upcyclingfurniture #circulardesign #circulareconomy
