An increase in consumer confidence and a reduction in rail strikes have boosted the UK dining-out market's penetration, according to Lumina Intelligence data. A rise of +3.3 percentage points demonstrates how consumers are increasingly returning to their usual routines, as the cost of living pressures ease and post-pandemic behaviours stabilise. Hospitality sales in the Republic of Ireland were €54m higher in the first quarter of 2024 than in the first three months of 2023 📈 However, drinks sales by volume were fractionally down year-on-year, and growth was instead powered by an average uplift in prices of 9.7%. Pressure on spending is leading to some important changes in consumers’ drinking preferences—including a focus on quality over quantity. Supporting Independent Restaurants This Festive Season: Your Custom Counts 🎄🍽️ Did you know that 97% of people prefer independent restaurants over chains? That’s according to last week’s poll. Thanks to all who took part. Yet, many of these beloved establishments are battling to survive. As someone who interacts with hospitality customers daily, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges they face. The Struggles ❌No-shows: These can be devastating, especially for small businesses that rely on every booking. They’re up by 20%. 📈Rising cost of produce: Inflation and supply chain issues have driven up costs, squeezing already tight margins. 💸Changes in government support: Many restaurants are still reeling from reduced support post-pandemic. 🪙Economic pressures: With households cutting back, dining out is often one of the first luxuries to go. How Can You Help? 🎄Book and show up: If you make a reservation, please honor it or cancel in advance. Be prepared to pay booking deposits. 🎅Buy vouchers: Many independent restaurants offer gift vouchers, which make great presents and provide immediate support. 🦃Dine out or order in: Treat yourself and support local businesses. 🤶Spread the word: Share your favourite spots with friends and family. 🎟️Voucher Schemes in the UK: There are various loyalty and voucher schemes available that can help you save while supporting local businesses. For example, Tesco Clubcard and Sainsbury’s Nectar offer points that can be redeemed at various restaurants. While chains offer consistency, availability, and economies of scale that translate into deals and value, it’s crucial to remember the unique experiences and personal touches that independent restaurants provide. They are the heart of our communities, offering diverse cuisines and personalised service. This festive season, let’s remember to support the hospitality industry. The long hours and dedication of restaurant staff create amazing experiences for us. Your support can make a significant difference.🎄✨ Will you be dining out this festive season? Any recommendations? 🍽️👌✨ 🎄✨🎅✨🍽️✨🤶✨🎄✨🎅✨🍽️✨🎄✨ Restaurants, need help with your bookings management and payment processing this festive season?
