#PuertoRico knows the importance of #grid #resilience better than most and #solar has played a huge role. Great to see Loan Programs Office | U.S. Department of Energy support larger scale investment and the critical addition of #battery backup. Did you know that in 2000 #wind accounted for 0% of Oklahoma's total #electricity generation capacity but now accounts for almost 40%? I knew wind was important, but I did not know just how important it is to the state's electricity generation stack until Chase Farha and I dug into the data for the Q3 edition of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City's #Oklahoma #Economist. Today’s call for new #cleanelectricity is a big deal for #BC. Why? Because, as we work together to build more #homes, and grow our #mining, #energy, #construction, #transportation and other sectors - we need to double our supply of #reliable, #affordable, #cleanpower. This is a good first step in what needs to be a purposeful approach to growing our #energysecurity and meeting future #demand. Not only will this added supply to BC’s grid help people heat their homes, get to work and run their #businesses - it’ll help make sure B.C. can #compete and #win in the global #economy. Because, while #oilandgas will continue be an important part of the #energymix as the global shift to a #cleaneconomy continues to ramp up - #investors increasingly want to put their dollars behind industries powered by #cleanenergy. With jurisdictions and businesses mobilizing to attract this investment, today’s call to power is showing the world BC’s #openforbusiness. #BCPoli #Competitiveness #Electrification #IndigenousEquity #Renewables #Hydro #Wind #Solar #BatteryStorage #EVs New Economy Canada Merran Smith Kevin Deagle BC Hydro Josie Osborne

Via Canary Media Inc.: The Grain Belt Express, a major Midwestern transmission line, just received conditional loan approval for a nearly $5B U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) loan guarantee. ⚡ This would be a big step forward in reducing grid congestion and bringing GW of clean power online that would benefit both consumers and corporate energy buyers. It's encouraging to see bipartisan support for much-needed infrastructure improvements that improve grid resiliency, reliability, and sustainability. #NovaScotia is racing against time to move away from coal dependency by 2030, a challenging yet essential goal in our fight against #climatechange. With coal prices soaring and #renewable sources currently making up 43% of NS Power’s energy mix, the province is striving to transition to 80% renewables in under six years. This ambitious plan involves significant investments in #wind, #solar, and #batterystorage. However, the path is fraught with financial and logistical hurdles, from high energy costs for consumers to the need for substantial federal support. Peter Gregg, President of Nova Scotia Power, and other leaders believe it’s achievable, but it will require a collective effort. Huge news for #ERCOT power supply as the initial list of reliable, dispatchable power plants are approved for government-backed loans to build in Texas. We'll see who actually goes through with the program and gets steel in the ground, but it's a welcomed site to see. Massive federal subsidies for renewables have crowded out investment in other forms of power generation. Last year, Texas took a big step in an effort to level the playing field. https://lnkd.in/gjQXKsab

I can't help wondering about this news. We're sitting here with clean sparks in negative territory which is inevitably going to push up capacity prices against a backdrop of the government wanting more, not less CCGT capacity. By going down the synchronous condenser route we're implicitly accepting that CCGTs will sit idle earning higher availability payments while entirely new assets are built and run to try to keep the grid stable in a high renewables world. While that might be desirable 10 years from now, I'm not persuaded it's in the best interests of consumers and managing consumer costs today. https://lnkd.in/eWBmv45s

On July 9, 2024, Alberta hit a new summer demand peak record of 11,820 MW, surpassing the previous record of 11,721 MW from June 29, 2021. Pool prices soared to $825.28/MWh (¢82.53/kWh). Such elevated peak prices during system stress might influence future pricing. Thankfully, stronger wind generation and no major outages are keeping prices softer day over day. AESO reported grid stability and sufficient generation is expected for the next few days. Remember to keep energy conservation tips in mind! #Alberta #Energy #RecordPeak #SustainableEnergy #Grid

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Loan Programs Office (LPO) has made a conditional commitment for an up to $72.8 million partial loan guarantee to finance the development of a solar+energy storage microgrid project, located on the Tribal lands of the Viejas Band of the Kumeyaay Indians near Alpine, California. Indian Energy LLC, TURTLE MOUNTAIN BAND OF CHIPPEWA, and the Sault Ste Marie Band of Chippewa Indians are the owners of the project company, while the project developer, Indian Energy, is a 100% Native American owned energy development firm. The borrower, IE VEM Managing Member LLC, is a Tribal energy development organisation (TEDO) owned by Indian Energy. The Viejas Microgrid project involves a 15 MW solar PV system and a 38 MWh long-duration battery energy storage component. “This project is the first to be offered a conditional commitment through the Tribal Energy Financing Program, which was expanded and provided new loan authority by President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA),” the DOE said in a statement. "The IRA takes the largest action on climate and clean energy in American history, including by providing funding specifically for Tribes to plan for and adapt to climate change. This conditional commitment underscores the Biden-Harris Administration’s deep commitment to working with Tribal Nations and communities to build an inclusive, equitable, and resilient clean energy future." #cleanenergy
