The course for scaling a business can be difficult and quite gruelling at times! Below, we’ve summarised some of the key points from an interesting Forbes article on the ‘3 traps to avoid when scaling a successful business’: 1️. Turnover is vanity: Very often, business leaders hope for rapid growth, yet this uncontrolled turnover without keeping an eye on profitability can be extremely detrimental to a business. Always prioritise sustainable growth over flashy top-line numbers. 2️. Avoid scaling at the cost of everything else. Growth is a marathon, not a sprint. Therefore, scaling should be a thoughtful and strategic process with room to pivot based on data and feedback, especially when it comes to decisions around personnel. 3️. You can’t be everything to everyone. Although expansion is exciting, business leaders should focus on what they do best before venturing into new areas and spreading themselves too thin. Our Founder, Philippa Tuck, has personally seen and felt first-hand the impact of not listening to the above. She says: "It's common for leaders to rush to the finish line, wanting to prove themselves to get to the big numbers all in year one of scaling, to then only fail year two, three and even four. Mentally that is a hard thing for a CEO to come back from, but also for an organisation to pivot from without a proper growth plan. 150+ participants in Munich shaped the future of family businesses. Last year I spoke at the Next Generation Summit. I delivered a keynote themed: “How to Successfully Engage & Empower Next-Generation Leaders - A Global Perspective on Family Business”. I shared my global insights and experiences about the long-term success of family-owned businesses. The Next Generation Summit was organized by the leading German family business and entrepreneurship organisations. Often, joining a family firm can be a life-long project so it can feel like a burden if not thought through properly. Next Generations have to decide whether they want to get involved and in what capacity. Long-term success in family business favours the prepared mind. I provided some guidance on successful succession: Communication: Regular meetings and cultivating essential inter-generational communication skills are key to success. Mandate: Seek clarity about what roles. Next Gens can work in the business, become board members and/or responsible owners of the business. Authority: Important to provide authority so Next Gens can learn, grow, and lead their teams and organizations. Autonomy: It can be difficult to give responsibilities to others, but Next Gens (like others) need autonomy and a sense of freedom to decide and act. Strategy: The long-term business strategy must be in place. It will guide the decisions of Next Gens and the lifelong project that they are potentially committing themselves to. Learning & Development: Talents and leaders need constant learning and development, so it is important to focus on these matters. I stressed that planning should start early. Manage the process carefully and involve family, colleagues, and relevant stakeholders It can also be an advantage with outside experts and advisors. Understand the complexity involved and prepare Next Gen successors for roles related to: Ownership Governance Leadership In the end, have fun during the succession journey, and cherish nice moments and experiences.
