Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer (11.7%) and is a leading cause of cancer death (6.9%). Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) accounts for about 25% of breast cancer diagnoses. Because it is difficult for clinicians to determine the type and stage of DCIS, patients with DCIS are often overtreated. An interdisciplinary team of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and ETH Zürich developed an AI model that can identify the different stages of DCIS. Their model shows that both the state and arrangement of cells in a tissue sample are important for determining the stage of DCIS. The use of AI in healthcare surpasses expectations and makes a positive impact, from early disease detection to personalized treatment plans. AI can reduce the cost of healthcare and potentially save countless lives in the coming years. In the British news today, an actual good use case for ctDNA-type liquid biopsy. This is surely the right sort of clinical use case given there is a vanishingly small amount of DNA shed from Stage I/II tumours and the test is hugely expensive. Nobody needs an expensive way to detect late stage cancer, but using the technology to inform treatment decisions can be transformational. #earlydetection #cancer

Fighting liver cancer takes a team! Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most aggressive forms of liver cancer and the fifth-most prevalent cancer worldwide but there's hope on the horizon. Researchers at @vcutransplant including incoming VCU School of Medicine student Kush Savsani and robotic surgeon Seung Duk Lee, M.D., Ph.D., are pioneering a new targeted photodynamic therapy (PDT) that uses light to selectively kill cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue.
