Why Large Enterprise Tech Companies Sponsor Tech Events and How this can guide Startups and SMBS #Events #Sponsorships #Marketing #Technology #Startups #MarketingStrategy #MarketingTips #Growth 1) Brand Visibility and Awareness Reason: Large enterprises invest in tech event sponsorships to significantly boost their brand visibility and reinforce their presence in the tech community. Impact for Startups and SMBs: When startups and SMBs see major brands sponsoring an event, it’s a strong indicator that the event is high-value and attracts a quality audience. This can give smaller companies confidence in participating, knowing they will share the stage with industry leaders and gain exposure. 2) Thought Leadership and Industry Influence Reason: Enterprises use tech events to position themselves as thought leaders by hosting keynote sessions, panel discussions, and workshops. Impact for Startups and SMBs: Participating in events where industry giants share insights allows smaller companies to learn from the best and position themselves within the same influential circles. It also opens opportunities for networking and partnerships. 3) Lead Generation and Customer Acquisition Reason: Sponsorships provide enterprises with access to a highly targeted audience, facilitating lead generation and customer acquisition efforts. Impact for Startups and SMBs: The presence of large companies looking to generate leads indicates a well-curated attendee list. Startups and SMBs can leverage this opportunity to connect with potential customers, partners, and investors who are drawn to the event by these major sponsors. 4) Product Launches and Demonstrations Reason: Enterprises often use tech events as platforms to launch new products and demonstrate their latest innovations. Impact for Startups and SMBs: Witnessing enterprise-level product launches can inspire and educate smaller companies on market trends and effective launch strategies. Participating in the same event allows startups to showcase their innovations alongside renowned brands, adding credibility to their offerings. 5) Networking and Strategic Partnerships Reason: Events provide a fertile ground for networking with other industry leaders, potential clients, and strategic partners. Impact for Startups and SMBs: The networking opportunities at events sponsored by large enterprises are invaluable. Smaller companies can meet industry influencers, potential collaborators, and investors in a conducive environment, greatly enhancing their business development prospects. TIP: To confirm consistency in an event, ask for some information on how many events big tech have sponsored with them? do they attend globally or just a one off? have they renewed for years or a one off? Most events will attract the big names at least once, however keeping big tech is a big challenge, so if there is consistency, you can have more confidence that the event is a well run event that brings results. Good Luck!

I’ve been to an insane number of networking events in the past 3 months… Here’s what I learned(DTC Edition): 1. Brands get baited - What do I mean by this? Brands will go to events, thinking they will meet other founders–only to realize that it’s drowned out by SaaS and Agencies. WOAH, now don’t get me wrong… Some SaaS products and agencies are awesome–I mean, I run an agency myself… But to brands, it feels like a bait and switch. Analogy: “I thought you said there would be girls in this club… I see like 3 and the rest are guys” Think about it from a brand’s perspective: They came for X(because that was the promise). They got Y(baited). This brings me to #2. 2. Events Need a Better Vetting Process (I’m guilty of this) This is a bit tricky because it depends on the objective of the events. Want more attendees? Make more genuine connections? What’s the goal? The most important part of events(I’ve recently realized) is the type of people who come. What are their objectives? What are THEIR goals? Let there be no mistake, you cannot get it correct the first time. The only thing you can do is additional screening based on what you see on their profile. The rest is observation based on your events and note it down for next time. For Creators and Conversions(CAC), we have a black list. There’s a certain culture we want to foster. If certain attendees don’t see the same vision, it’s not healthy to invite them to the next because it ruins the integrity of the event mission. 3. Too Much Selling - This is tricky, but also quite straightforward… For CAC, we want to foster an environment for long term partnerships and collaborations… But there definitely comes a time when someone is being TOO salesy. There is a difference between navigating alignment in our work, and someone pitching everyone… I do not recommend. 4. Sponsors Get Drowned Out - This one is bizarre In #3, I described that being too salesy just doesn’t feel good to have in a more intimate environment. However, I also understand that sponsors need to make an ROI. And we want that to happen as well. However, be strategic with your sponsors. Example: I went to an event about a month ago and noticed that there were at least 10(no kidding) booths next to each other–all agencies offering very similar services. They paid money to be there and were extremely pitchy… But it’s not surprising to me at all. Everyone there wanted the same business and had to spark conversation in order to recoup back their investment. But this doesn’t do the attendees OR sponsors justice. A lot of sponsors don’t actually want to bombard attendees with demos or sales pitches. But if there are 9 other competitors next to you, you almost have no choice… So, be more strategic with your sponsors/partners. These are the 4 big points I have–many different smaller points that I’ll save for a different day. But what are your thoughts? Are these points valid? I’d love to understand other perspectives.
