Can SDR teams be replaced by AI? If they’re running a relevance-only messaging strategy…then the answer is probably yes. And here’s why: If SDRs aren’t personalizing & tailoring their messages to each individual prospect; But rather, are sending out multiple emails at once, based around buyer persona & industry verticals ONLY - Then their role as a SDR, can be boiled down to simply filling out email templates & pressing “send”. And it will only be a matter of time, before AI will automate their tasks, and eliminate their role completely.

Yesterday on a meeting Carl Koussan-Price was talking about how AI is revolutionizing the SaaS world and there was a brief discussion about AI taking away the jobs of salespeople. He pondered about the distant possibility of Bot A from the selling company and Bot B from buying company discussing SaaS solutions that suit their needs, agreeing on commercials and closing deals all on their own without human involvement. Sounds ridiculous doesn't it? 😂 Would a company rely on an AI bot to do it's buying? NO WAY. Same would apply to the other side of the coin i.e. selling! So as long as you're leveraging AI to help you with your day to day, your human element can't be taken away from you, was his point. Interesting insight!

Is SDR role in its final legs? SDR has been a vital function in the GTM funnel since years, where they have been instrumental in finding the right account, finding the right people, sending emails and follow ups and booking demo calls. If one closely look at these workflows, a large part of these can be automated and hyper personalised by AI. SDR roles will be one of the first casualties of AI implementation in GTM functions. The decline of these positions in large corporations will be significantly hastened in the upcoming years.

Throughout history, go-to-market teams have architected around the available tech. CRM gave rise to operations. Call centers bred inside sales. Sales engagement launched the SDR / BDR function. And team architecture is changing again in the wake of AI. Now, there is lots of debate re: if AI SDRs are the future, or if it’s more of a “tech as a teammate” philosophy with SDRs + AI. Here’s my perspective: An AI SDR just replaces the job outright. It doesn’t innovate. It doesn’t reimagine. It doesn't fundamentally change the job to be done. However, an SDR using AI allows their entire job to evolve. SDRs can shift their focus and hone their skillset further into the prospecting process, relinquishing control and agency to AI to handle the administrative prep work previously required of an SDR. Generative AI provides a fresh way for us to think about GTM team architecture and role specialization.
